Depends on what you want to do about it. If cost is your only concern then you may have problems. Read through our nutritional section. See where you want to go with this. Kibble is over the top expensive if you are feeding any type of quality (it's still crap in a bag). You can go raw but it's going to require time and money that you're going to have to spend. There is no "cheap" method. ciao

Read some of the nutritional threads to see where you want to go. There is everything from freeze dried (know absolutely nothing about this), commercial grinds (many don't require even balancing as bone and various organs are often included), frankenprey (the use of various proteins, meats, bones and organs to eventually become a balanced whole) often using grocery store or butcher meats and of course the ultimate whole prey. Read through and see where you want to go with this. There are mentors available to help you as well, you need only apply and once you get your 15 posts they will help you teach and balance your little ones' diets ciao

If your ferret is just a few months old he/she may take to raw meat right off the bat---especially babies. Surprisingly, my two year old took to meat after one day of soupie. so u can offer some meat to see if you can skip soupie stage.
Continue to ask questions. People are more than glad to help u.

he's around 3 or 4, not sure sshelter couldn't age him. when we gave him a raw chicken wing end, he crunched it down no problem.

Considering his reaction I would definitely check out some of the menus in the archives. These are locked down mentoring threads but at the end of the thread is a menu that has been approved for graduation. Read through these and see if any will fit your needs. There will be switching issues there always are but it's more a matter of you learning how to balance his diet. See what you come up with ciao

If he's ok with chicken wings, can I test other meats and slowly introduce them to his diet? we have some liver ready to try him on and we do have some other meats such as lamb and beef. Can ferrets eat fish? if so, what sort of fish.

Any fish, as long as it's not salted or smoked. Do watch feeding larger fish for possible contaminants. Freeze fresh fish for at least 2 weeks. Feed no more than once a week and you should be fine. You will need to measure or weigh the liver so that you don't give more than the weekly amount needed. The chicken wings are awesome but you will have to find other small boned meats as your lamb and beef will only cover your little ones protein needs and not their bone needs. You will need between 7 and 9 bone in meals per week to cover the wee ones calcium needs ciao

I would definitely try working in other meats if he already accepts chicken wings. Don't be discouraged if he doesn't take to them right away though. Ferrets can be very imprinted on their food and it can take time and patience to get them to accept new foods. I would definitely read through the menu and make sure you feel comfortable with the balance and variety, and check out some of the archived switching threads for ideas. I would really suggest signing up for a mentor to help work on introducing new meats and fine tuning your balance. holisticferret60.proboards.com/thread/61/sign-mentoring-program
