My babies have switched tastes to white mice and white rats. They use to be crazy over ASF rats, which have a nice little smell inside after removing guts. I still feed those, but not as much at the moment. Ferrets get fickle sometimes for those who have not experienced it yet. I thought that Perfect Prey had overshot my order, but no---it was me. I now 25 large rats in my freezer. One will feed all 4 ferrets. I do pull the fur off. Nice tails to crunch on! I cut those in 3 or 4 pieces. 13.75 for a 5 pk. Have not compared prices. Just so impressed with cleaness, vacuumed packing and dry ice.

They sure can be fickle! I remember my ferrets used to dislike rabbit, but now it's one of their favorite proteins. Also, they used to hate rat to the point of not eating it at all. Well, I took it off the menu but recently I ran out of guinea pig and gave them a rat instead. They ate all of it! I'm contemplating putting rat back on the menu, but it's risky lol, they may go back to hating it once they have to eat it every week.
By the way, when you feed a whole rat, do you cut it into 4 portions, one for each ferret? Or do they all share it whole? I used to give Sunny and Katie whole animals or chunks, but lately they've been squabbling, do yours ever do this?

I have found they my ferrets prefer white or tan whole prey.
If i give them 2 asf rats One dark and one tan or white one. they will generally stash the dark one and chase each other around trying to get the light colored one. The light colored one is always eaten first and most of the time right on the spot.
I made the mistake of ordering a bunch of dark mice not thinking that it mattered it they were white or dark before I discovered this.

Ferretsnfalcon, I do cut it up and feed in different plates because one of my ferrets is not accepted, the other is in hospital pen. However, other 2 I feed together. I just make sure everyone has pieces of organs with their meals. Mine have not squabbled over meals yet. Maybe separating a few will help with the fighting.
Msav ---interesting observation. I do get lighter ASF rats in my shipment---will have to try giving them the tan ones.

Food fights often occur here Perfectly normal for them, but it is one reason when I feed liver, etc EVERYONE gets just that, and not that combined with any protein or they will pick out favourite parts and ignore the rest.

Yeah, so far cutting the prey into two pieces has stopped the fighting, except on mouse days. Both ferrets LOVE mice, but Katie is especially obsessed with them. She will take a mouse from the bowl, stash it, and then instead of going back to the bowl to get another mouse she will hunt Sunny down and try to steal his mouse. A lot of vicious hissing and running around the room ensues, but they never hurt each other. I just feel so bad for the poor guy, he only wants to eat in peace, and she's such a brat! Usually he eventually loses her and she'll go back to the bowl, but sometimes I have to pick him up and let him eat a mouse in my arms until she goes away, lol.

My Dizzy does the same thing. There are multiple bowls filled with their raw food but she insists on just going up to everyone else and taking what they have. They hiss back and forth but that's all they do, it never goes further than that. I think they're just bluffing.
