We have a new member who needs some help and has some questions.
I'm going to begin this thread for her and then copy and paste the pm's I've received so that some of you can help.

1.Could you please clarify why COTW is a preferred supplement when it contains fruits and vegetables? Does this not create glucose issues? Thank you.
Here is where I asked on the Admin board for clarification and Katt responded and I replied to the pm
2. Thank you. Honey Bun had some spacing out episodes a little over a year ago. Glucose was 61. She started having some blood in her stools on occasion. "Holistic exotic vet" 2 hours away in another state diagnosed insulinoma based on the single glucose and started pred. She said the only other possibility was a brain tumor. Glucose quickly rose to 142 and her weight doubled. Vet didn't want to do another glucose for 3 months. All of her lymph nodes were enlarged. Vet said it was likely "all that stuff going on in her belly." At the time she was on Marshall's. I tried tried to transition to Natural Gold, which is lower in carbs. The blood in her stools increased. When I couldn't get in touch with one of the exotic vets, I stopped the Natural Gold and went back to Marshall's. A couple of months later, blood returned in the stools and got increasingly worse. My phone call to the vet was returned a week later. Carafate was doubled with no response. I took her in. That vet refused to check glucose. He put her on Metro and said it if didn't stop in 5 days it was a tumor. A week later, stools were very bloody. I decided I was wasting my time driving 2 hours one way to see the "exotic specialists" and took her to a local vet that I had used in the past. He asked if we had confirmed insulinoma by labs. We had not. He ran a panel. Insulin level was normal. Glucose was in 700s. Vet said we had made her into a diabetic. We started insulin. Glucoses would not come down. She was at double the high normal amount of insulin. After almost a month, I got another vial of insulin. Glucose dropped over 300 points in a little over 12 hours. Vet had me slowly transitioning over to Natural Gold again. After a couple of months, blood in stools started lessening and finally stopped by the end of the summer. Lymph nodes returned to normal. I had the misfortune to get a second bad vial of insulin. About the time she was on 100% Natural Gold and glucoses were in the 200-300 range, I learned that there was a zero carb food so I transitioned her over to that. Two and a half days later, she had her last insulin. Glucoses were in the 70-80 range for the next month. Vet said she was in remission and there was no need to continue checking. When I started the zero carb food, her stools got very loose. I had been giving her Nupro because I felt that it had some benefits. I upped the Nupro and stools improved. About once a month I would try to decrease the Nupro. Blood would return in the stools so I resumed the previous amount of Nupro. I also increased the amount of Nupro because that seemed to also help with the loose stools. In December the blood in her stools became more of a regular thing than a flare up. The lymph node at the right jaw enlarged. It still is. A needle biopsy was normal. We did a couple of weeks of Clinda. I started researching blood in stools and IBD. I felt that there was a possibility of a diet sensitivity or allergy. I called a vet school and signed up for a phone consultation with a holistic vet. She never called. My vet said he was not strong in nutrition. Over a weekend stools got very bloody. I freaked out and stopped the zero carb. I put her on baby food turkey, Nupro, taurine and salmon oil. I was still concerned that that was not enough but couldn't find the answers I needed. Five days later I fed her lunch and went to get groceries. When I got back and got her up to feed her, she was flaccid and unresponsive. Glucose was 40. It nosedived several times over the weekend. I restarted Natural Gold. Vet put her back on pred. Glucoses then were 300+ so we stopped pred. By Monday, glucose was normal. Vet examined her. She seemed fine. Two days later I had her by my side so I could watch her all day. She ate well. Two hours later she was staggering. Glucose was 30. Vet restarted pred and drew another profile. Lab screwed it up and finally requested a redraw a week later. A week later they finally reported a normal insulin. We started a pred taper and Metro and FortiFlora for the IBD. There was no response to the Metro. In fact, stools got very bloody. I switched her to turkey baby food, Carnivore Care, Pancreatin, Nupro and FortiFlora Tuesday. Her glucose is 101. I've transitioned her to Classic Fancy Feast Turkey and Giblets. Stools have only small amounts of blood intermittently. Many have zero blood. I know this is not a permanent or ideal solution but I had to feel like I was doing something besides watching her colon be destroyed. I have been checking on her as frequently as every 15 minutes at times and no longer than an hour or two. I'm exhausted but still committed to giving her my best. I have some slippery elm but haven't used it because her stools are generally much better lately. I have reishi, bone meal and Bach rescue remedy on order. She turned 7 this week. Her weight had been fairly stable [+/- an ounce or two]. This week she's gained a couple of ounces. She sleeps most of the time but plays and has good tone when she's awake. Her vision deteriorated just before all of this started. I think that has had an affect on her activity. She tries to keep up with Suga but when Suga gets far enough away that she can't find her, Honey Bun finds a favorite spot and goes to sleep. They are free range in the house. Since I started grinding the new and old foods together and wetting them for transition, she has refused all efforts to return to dry. I have absolutely done everything I know to do. Sometimes I'll work with her for 30 minutes to an hour. All that seems to do is stress us both out. That causes me to be concerned about success with a raw diet. Suga has been only a little more of a success story with diet changes. I want to do what is best for them and am open to all support. Because of the adverse events over the past year+ and because I have felt helpless at times in finding accurate and reliable resources, I tend to look at everything under a microscope. That is my basic nature. Now it's amplified. I couldn't bear the thought of doing anything to hurt one of them. I have previously been owned by 6 fuzzkids. One had an insulinoma and adreanal disease. The vet explained to me that they are supercarnivores. For over a year, I cooked chicken breasts every 3 hours and fed them all. That was all I knew to do. The pharmacy put a flavoring in the pred that made Leroy's sugars bottom out. I put him on Melatonin, even though the vet said it wouldn't help. His hair grew back. After a little over a year I lost him to a perforated ulcer. He bled out. Shortly thereafter, Belle got really sick. I kept trying to convince the vets that she had an infection. After 5 days we went to vet school at a university. They still wanted to think it was everything but infection. They promised to draw labs but didn't. Then they took her to surgery. Her liver was full of abscesses. They didn't wake her up. I always wondered if it was from improper prep of the chicken breasts. I boiled the heck out of them but still wondered if it wasn't enough. Vet school folks scolded me for not having her on kibble and said they had no clue where the infection came from. Trixie suddenly stopped using her hind legs. Glucose was fine. Vet said she had a fracture in her back and a suspicious spot, possibly a neoplasm. Bowden suddenly went down hill one day at the age of 3. By the time I got him to the vet he coded. Vet tapped his belly and got blood. She thought he might have had a tumor in his spleen that burst. Bubba pulled a Houdini and managed to escape a closed up house through some sort of secret passageway that I could never find. He didn't manage to escape an oncoming car. I'm glad to have found this group. I have been trying to navigate my way through the wealth of information her to figure out how to get from where we are now to where we need to be. Your help, support and willingness to share is very much appreciated.
3.How far in advance of a feeding can Pancreatin be added? I need to lodge my fuzzies at the vet's for a few hours and want to simply their care as much as possible. If I could add the Pancreatin myself before I take them, it would be ideal. I have to drop them off at 8 AM. Feeding is at 2 PM. Thank you.
Any and all help with her concerns and issues would be really appreciated.
Thanks,
Stef
