So now that my girls are fully on raw, hurray! they are getting quite a variety of protein. Right now they've got chicken, turkey, quail, cornish hen, beef, pork, lamb, goat, duck, rabbit and even some elk (just tendons to chew on) in their diet. However, they definitely prefer some types of proteins over other proteins. They always eat all of their quail, chicken, cornish hen, and pork minus a few pieces (so I know they are getting the right amount, which doesn't seem like a lot of meat, but I think they are starting to self regulate and not gorge so much ;D). But.... when it comes to the lamb, goat, beef, rabbit and especially the commercial ground duck carcass patty they had last night, they are only eating a little bit and leaving the rest and it doesn't seem like they are getting near enough food I know they like the meat and will eat it because they take it from my hands and eat it and stash it and I see them eating it, but because it's not their "favourite" they won't eat as much of it Should I be worried? If I only gave them meats they ate all of, they wouldn't be getting enough variety in their diet (they'd basically be eating chicken and chicken-like birds and pork and that'd be it). Is it really going to hurt them to not eat that much food a few meals a week? They are getting fed twice a day (once in the morning and once before bed) so it's not like they have to go another 24 hours until the next meal and they are both gaining weight (Sophie's up to 1.4lbs from 1.2lbs and Olivia's up to 1.6lbs from 1.2lbs) but I still worry they aren't getting enough.

I wouldn't worry too much. Just make sure you put out less (rather than waste it) and feed something they like on the next meal. I don't worry too much. Minion has decided he's not fond of chicken, but left with it he will usually eat it. He would much prefer that I let him feast on a totally prey diet. I would go broke trying to feed the brat that type of diet. He ate a whole rat by himself the other day...brat..he's going to blow up ciao

Same here. Mine get what they get. Usually they eat it sooner or later. Although- I DO have some stubborn ones who refuse to touch their food if it's bigger than a quarter(Willow!!! ) They just get a bit hungrier for the next meal ;D

Mine do the same thing, they have their favorites and so far waiting them out seems to work except for ground venison, they've decided this is a no go other than a quick taste so I'm giving up on that, the dogs can have it. But anything else if I leave it in they get hungry and eat it overnight. Like sherry said just put less in and plan for it, like mine ate a whole quail yesterday and today will probably eat half as much in beef, so they'll get something they like better tomorrow. Mine didn't seem to like rabbit much at first but now they eat it fine.

;D Thanks guys! I don't like to baby my animals too too much and I figured that they should just learn to suck it up and eat it if they are hungry ;D but I just thought I should double check and make sure it wasn't going to end up being dangerous for them. They seem to be eating their foods eventually now, maybe they just like it to season a bit first

Or maybe they're just waiting for mamma to cave, and give them something they'd prefer ;D

I wouldn't be surprised Sherry ;D And I know what you mean Jackie! And of course it's the expensive meats that aren't their favourites. The girls hardly touched their commerical ground rabbit last night yet they'll eat it if I hand the pieces to them. It's like they don't like the ground because they have to stick their face in it on the plate and can't just grab a chunk and run off with it... It's such a waste though. I think I need to cut the patties in half and freeze them like that, though I'm not sure how to go about cutting a frozen patty in half (they come frozen) without defrosting it too much.. hmmm Maybe I should also cut the patties in chunks when I feed them and stash them around the cage for them? Finicky little monsters

Mine are like that with things as well. Is it the NV rabbit, or a different one? You can let them defrost somewhat, cut them, and refreeze.

It's the Urban Carnivore rabbit patties, I think I'll have to do that, it's $25 a case and they are wasting it andye Urban Carnivore Duck patties like crazy. What's the NV rabbit? Is it commercial ground as well? They seem to prefer actual meat but I have a bit of an issue with feeding whole rabbits since I kind of love bunnies haha. As long as it doesn't look like a creature I'll feed it though

Nature's Variety frozen raw. They sell in one ounce patties. It does wind up being more expensive, and they do have about 5% veggie matter, but it mind wind up being easier for you. For cutting the UC, I defrost in the fridge overnight, and chop in the morning. Forget cutting THOSE things while frozen ;D
