Okay so about two weeks ago my ferret Binxi began loosing hair and its now very pachey looking whereas my other ferret hasn't shed at all so i was wondering if this could be more then just her shedding away her winter coat. She also feels like she has lost some weight i'm going to buy a scale today and compare it to her weight from the vet last month just to make sure. other than the hair loss and weight loss she is eating, active, and isn't lethargic and she was at the vet about a month ago and everything checked out and... any thoughts what could be going on? Thats the best picture i could I just took this picture today. find from before of her coat.

How old is your ferret? My first thought would be adrenal? Spring time can be shedding time, but if its patchy and you're ferrets losing large amounts, a trip to the vet never hurts.

This is interesting. I'm tagging gfountain since we just had a similar discussion. Binxie is only two years old and that's a bit young for Adrenal. Adrenal hair loss usually begins at the rump so something else is causing this. I haven't seen any of mine shed their winter coats in this way. Let's see what some other Ferrents think. Spring brings a loss of appetite though and they do lose weight. A quick look through the threads suggest possible overgrooming but I don't see this pattern on the posts. Take a look at this article and see what you think: kristenmcdonald.com/portfolio/web/ferretfacts/www.ferretfacts.com/ferret-hair-loss.html

Forgot to add... I know you mentioned you had taken her to the vet but if there's weight loss and hair loss, I'd talk to my vet again.

My female sheds horribly during spring. Worse than the others. It's like her head and tail doesn't shed, but her body does. It gets patchy but fills back in quickly.

One thing to remember.....age sometimes has nothing to do with adrenal. The youngest ferret on record with adrenal is 9 months and Katt's Koda was adrenal at 18 months if I remember correctly. Two years of age is young, but not too young if it's a genetic predisposition ciao

Also i had her neutered about a year ago when she was six months idk if that would mean anything.

I'll keep this thread bumped and make sure that some others see it also.

I'm going to think that if the ferret was altered at 6 months that this isn't adrenal but a funky shed out You really should see Lady Morgain...she has no guard coat this year She blew it all. She has her gorgeous fuzzy white undercoat but guard hair...practically zero. She has her gorgeous little black poley face, top of her head and her legs the rest of her is entirely roaned out. I noticed today she's now got a black tripe down her back ...her guard coat is coming in It's been a real funky year for weather and our ferrets are showing it in their coats and behaviours ciao

I've been worried about my boy Slinkee because he hasn't been eating well and ounces have just been falling off of him. I noticed last night that he seems to be doing a funky shed. From his head to between his shoulders, he was short haired and sleek, from there to his tail he was floofy. Today, the sleek part has moved to just below his shoulders.

@desiebear Have you bathed her recently? If so, how often and if so is there a chance she didn't rinse all the way?
A friend of mine bathed hers once and she thought she had thoroughly rinsed. She got patchy because of skin irritation. She ended up vetting her and finding out it the culprit was most likely unrinsed baby shampoo. I believe she ended up doing a water rinse and then had some ointment I can't recall for sure though.

i washed her about a week ago because of the abnormal shedding but i didnt use any shampoo i just used some warm water to get the loose hair from her. Because brushing her wasn't doing anything. There were piles of hair in the cage even though i clean it daily which had me concerned. Also my other ferret hasn't been shedding at all so i thought it could be more then shedding season.
p.s. I bought a scale and she hasn't lost any weight! thank god. i guess the way her hair was falling out just made her bones stick out more. thanks everyone for the advice! i'm just going to keep a closer eye on her for the next week and see if any more hair falls out to make the vet appointment. as of today her hair stopped coming out in clumps just a couple strands here and there so i'm hoping its done now. thanks again everyone!

Just a random contribution ... my entire boy developed adrenal gland disease at 18 months. He has been implanted regularly since then, is still entire and still shows signs of adrenal if I don't implant him soon enough. Even though neutering, and specifically early neutering is risk factor, they can still develop adrenal young and entire.
Honestly it doesn't strike me as classic for adrenal, but give her chance to grow some clear back if she's otherwise well, sometimes they do have really odd moults!
