My new girlie Harley is a marked white, deaf, and has a short tail for her body. Someone suggested WS, but I don't have the eye to be able to tell by her facial features. Can a ferret have WS, and be smart as a whip? And can a ferret have WS and not be deaf?

Harley is just lovely. I have a deaf girl who looks alot like her but is not broad across the nose. Keller is not a Waardy. I suspect your Harley may be. I'll tag Heather for you. My Wynstan is a champagne and I suspect he is a Waardy but he is not deaf. He is a big goofy puppy of a Ferret. Some things he is very smart about but others not so much. It seems that Waardenburg syndrome runs the spectrum from "high functioning" to a little bit slower to catch onto things. holisticferret60.proboards.com/thread/11451/waardenburg-syndrome

Got one with markings too ---blaze, and she is deaf. Mine does not exhibit anything unusual other than deafness, short tail and short legs.
Vet thought Abbey would be deaf. She is a silver with faint markings of a blaze and a badger stripe on head, but not deaf. No short tail or legs.
Craigslist girl is also a silver with faint markings of a blaze--- badger stripe on head and is deaf. No short tail, no short legs.
One thing I noticed blackish tail with white tip on both my deaf girls. May be coincidence.
No mental or gait problems in any.

She has a striped tail too! And a funny gait, I stared at her walking & thought something might be wrong. But she dooks, dances, runs, jumps... Odd little duck.

Oh, she's a waardy alright. She's got the face, the markings. That whole white head is a dead give away but all the other descriptions just add to the whole diagnosis thing. She's very pretty though ciao

I am not sure, but more likely to be deaf. Maybe somebody will comment that knows.

The white head particularly is linked to neural crest variance because the reason the head is white is because the pigment cells didn't migrate that far in the embryo.
Pigment cells (melanocytes) actually originate from neural crest cells, and so-termed melanocyte-like cells which also derive from the neural crest have a critical function in the generation of an endocochlear potential in the inner ear, and hence in the perception of sound.
I hope that makes some sense?

I have a champagne panda and obviously she has a white head. But I have always wondered because she has way bigger ears than my silver and a different head.

They may be more likely to be deaf though and one of mine is.

Willy & Fredzia both have nearly identical markings to Harley they aren't deaf or have WS.
