I've seen a couple posts mentioning pumpkin puree for ferrets but wasn't really sure why it was being given to them. What are the benefits or what reasons would you give them that?

Pumpkin is purely for blockage protocol-when there is a strong possibility of something indigestible in the ferret. Its similar to taking a laxative I imagine.

Pumpkin is used along with vaseline as a blockage protocol. It should be used solely for that purpose because other than that, It has no role in the diet of an obligate carnivore. Obligate carnivores cannot digest and metabolise plant material, they should be eating only meat in their diet. When using pumpkin for blockage protocol,You take 1 tbsp 100% pure canned pumpkin, followed one hour later by 1 tsp vaseline. Then you alternate these both hourly until the ferret has nice big gloopy orange poops. Should take around 2-3 hours, and 4 hours max before vet assistance is required. @machan gave you a very good explanation of the blockage protocol. The pumpkin is fiber and that helps push everything through the digestive system. Vaseline helps ease the way.
