Too too smart! I'm beginning to think being at home all day with the ferrets was a major plus in the approval process based on what I'm learning about their capabilities. Crafty buggers I've told people before that ferrets are like a kitten-puppy-monkey mix, seems like hybrids get an extra dose of monkey in their observation and strategy abilities! I'm glad the B&E twins are avoiding Tico if he's claimed Lordship, all 3 have great stories. I can totally picture Tico laying down the law! I'll be on my toes for awhile, I'll have to see all of her ferret proofing and get some tips while there. Speaking of going there, is there any particular item for the ferrets that would be a good gift? Joan is very particular about food and I don't know where to go for that in Austin anyway. I was thinking toys, or heavy duty tunnels like the accordion folding kinds at hardware stores. Perhaps sheets or blankets? I'm not sure what toys are the best for hybrids so I figure I'd ask you. I don't want to show up empty handed and I don't want to ask her because that would ruin the surprise. As a gift you could get her a personalised T-shirt that says something like "Best Polecat Mom" or "Best Ferret Mom" I used to have a personalised hoodie that said Best Ferret Mum but it mysteriously disappeared in the wash but know I have a "Crazy Ferret Lady" T-shirt and another that has "I Heart" and then a picture of a ferret under the writing. Sleep sacks are good ones too I used to have a large rope tied to the ceiling in the shed with a big knot on the end which the ferrets used to sink their teeth into and dangle just above the floor and try to rag doll it while they were dangling, I need to make another one.

Oh I asked Bella about hybrid presents already, we settled on tunnels but I just wanted to do my due diligence and gather as many potential things as I can before deciding! I'm not sure if she drinks wine, but I do, so maybe I'll bring some along anyway and see what happens. Though it would be a bummer if she doesn't and I didn't have a corkscrew since I can't board a plane with one. Mimosas! Who doesn't like mimosas on a Sunday Funday? And it will be fun!

These are all good ideas, but I'm seeing her this Sunday so I wouldn't be able to get them in time! If I got cage linen type gifts I would order them from Little Feet Ferret Bedding and they wouldn't be here in time to bring. Her stuff is tough! I use it here currently and it's been through a lot but not a single hole or worn spot yet. It was a very last minute trip. My husband was supposed to be in DC this month, but after the snowstorm he was like "I'm not going anywhere near blizzard territory, even for work!" so I snuck in a day trip as he generally has a weeks notice for work trips. It was the safe but short notice option.

Looking at it closer I don't think it's the same cage. Slide out trays with ferrets? LOL! I guess they gave up on ferret cage making? Very confused.

I had one similar to that....you don't want the slide out trays. I had a wee marshals sprite, Pooka who figured out how to kick out the drawer (it was bent so wouldn't go out more than a bit) and escape. Considering the aptitude of the hybrids to work things out, you will never keep them in the cage ciao

Yup, exactly Heather it looks like a bad situation. At least it narrows down my choices! Too bad though because that's the one she and so many others like most for hybrids. They had a customer base, I wonder why they abandoned it.

They did a lot of custom orders for the ferret community. Maybe that's what they're doing now....just custom orders? ciao

I emailed them but they haven't responded as of yet. I got a good look at the cages at Joan's place and can see why she likes the Quality ones, thicker wire. The Martin cage has had to be repaired, but she said it was due to a wily jill and she's never had a hob damage them. But, it's possible if he really wanted to! She's emailed the Martin Cage company asking if there's a possibility for a thicker gauge wire but they never responded so she's taking it as a no. Confounded at every turn!

Cage woes solved! Email from Martin Cage representative to Joan:
Dear Joan,
Thank you for writing.
Yes, someone could order a custom model in 14 ga. wire. There would be an additional cost.
I was surprised to read your e-mail. We have been helping ferret rescues and shelters for over 26 years. This is the first time I've ever heard of a ferret breaking the welds on our wire.
Diana Martin Martin's Cages, Inc.
Emailing them now for cost difference for 14g wire with wire floors and pvc coating. Will be putting in linoleum on the floors, they're just a precaution so curious beasties don't wedge themselves between the pan and cage.

Yes, Joan posted to the Hungarian Hooligan site, so I realized your caging woes have been solved. That's fantastic. ciao

Yup, exciting! Diana Martin got back to me, it's only $25 more for the 14ga wire. Pretty happy! Total is $288 including shipping so far. She hasn't gotten specific on the cost of a couple more latches but I doubt it will be a difference maker. Emailing Joan one last time before I call and make the order for real. This is happening!

Yes!! I can't wait to decorate it! Ahhhhhh!!!! I need to get an order in for LFFB hammocks and cubes and things! I'm looking at picking him up the weekend of March 5th so hopefully that's enough time to get it done, I bet it will be though, nearly a month. Need to add a coat of paint to the room it's going in and the hall (no VOC scrubbable paint, love it) and get all my rice/peanuts/new toys in order. All the prep is like having a human baby haha
