Hi! I have a question is there any ferret coat color calculator available at all? There are several rabbit coat color calculators but I have not found one for ferrets yet. Maybe anyone here knows one or something like that?
I found out that rabbit and ferret color genetics are different somehow and it was a bit suprise to me thats why I am wondering. I have been raising rabbits for 12 years before I got into ferrets. I would like to know more about ferret genetics and basics for breeding. I do not want to mess anything up.
Thanks in advance.

There is a book on color genetics, Popper's book of colors or something along those lines. As I'm sure you know from raising rabbits, breeding any animal is a big undertaking and to do it properly requires a lot of research. Ferrets are extremely prone to health problems, many (I'd venture to say most) of which seem to be genetically correlated, and many of which are linked to certain coat colors. If you are considering breeding I would not recommend trying it on your own. Try contacting breeders and asking if they will teach and mentor you.

There is a coat colour calculator on Feritage which is a ferret pedigree and medical database, you have to register yourself and your ferrets to the website and their ancestors if they haven't been registered already.

the Basic rule of thumb is put poley to poley you get poley put pure albino to albino you get albino but if you are unsure of the true linage of your albinos you may end up with a split litter put poley to albino once again you end up with a split litter which can be anything from silver sandy albino or sable there is not a lawfully recognisable ferret pedigree database ( basically you could tell them your ferret came from so and so who was supreme champion who can prove otherwise ?) and unless there is true linage documentation you cannot calculate what colours will be born hope this helps take care bye for now Bev

Wow, thanks I will check it out! Sounds very interesting. Though I've found it isn't very accurate for the not natural colours, albino and sable. It calculated Whisper (silver) and Vinnie (albino) to mostly produce albino with the odd silver but there was no albinos in the litter at all last year and only one silver, the rest were sable.

That's the trouble with colour calculators I guess. If you don't know far enough back, they won't be anywhere near accurate and even if you do, there's an element of guess work.
For example, this year I have 2 half brothers whose Dad is a sandy who has previously had albino offspring (so cc^p), so these boys may be carrying albino (c) or sandy (c^p) ... and it will be a total mystery until I breed them. I plan to put each once of them to a jill that carries albino so I'll find out this year (hopefully) whether they carry c or c^p. No coat colour calculator could tell me that as it's down to chance.

Let's face it if you're breeding on the off colours and dilutes there is no calculator that's going to be able to help you. You would have to go back 7 to 10 generations...most of us don't have that type of history. People are notoriously poor at keeping track and most never actually considered colour an important factor. It's only recently that people are now recording not only genealogy but the important colours. Up until recently people have ignored the importance of the use of dilutes and markings and how it affects the health of their ferrets. Now, the public is becoming more aware as to how markings and dilutes and the use of silvers and DEWs in breeding programs are affecting the general health and mentality of their ferrets. To have a good breeding program you have to know the history of your stock and not only who bred who but what colour they were. Some of these colours have now been directly linked to health issues and shortened lifespans ciao

There is a site.. called Feritage...
Its basically a database for owners and breeders to list and combine pedigrees
on there it has an option for a progeny test. You put two names in ( other ferrets from the database of course) and it will give you all sorts of information including probability of what color and patterning.
Of course this is only as accurate as the info the owner of said ferret has or has put in, but its pretty interesting
