Hello! Sorry if this is in the wrong thread, I'm still trying to figure out this forum world lol
Anyways, so we JUST got our first ferret on the 1st. We haven't had a chance to find him a vet yet, but we are working on it. He's been waking up with a crusty eye since about the second day we had him. It seemed to get worse for a day, then it just went totally away. Today his other eye is crusty now every time he wakes up and having some pretty wet poops and he's not been using his litterbox like he was... They poops are wet and seedy. He's eating and drinking plenty. And he seems pretty chipper. But he is still new to us, so still not sure what his normal really is. But in m opinion I think he occasionally looses his balance a little and he's slightly lazier than normal. But he is still plenty perky and wanting to play and snuggle. It really seems like fees got a cold or something. Since the first crusty eye, he's been very occasionally sneezing, it not much. His eyes seem slightly watery, but don't get crusty at all until he goes to sleep. When he wakes up, one eye is crusted shut and he struggles to rub it on the towel in his cage to get it open. I've been getting a warm, damp wash cloth and holding it on the eye as long as he'll allow, them gently wiping it back. Anyone have any ideas?! Thank you!!!

PS. He's still little. I'm not positive on age, but between 3-6 months is my best guess.

I would vet. Eye infections are not something to mess with and can cause serious issues if they're allowed to progress. ciao

I'd take him to a vet for his eye, from the sound of it he isn't digesting his food properly which is why it's wet and seedy but it could also be parasites so a vet check would determan why his poop is like that.

Take him to vet. If clinical signs are getting worse, there is not much you can do on ypur own. Plus it is really recomended to get every new ferret for a vet visit.

I would set him up an appontment, too and check for stuff like earmites and temp. as well. I have bought all marshall farms babies. One of mine was sick like nasal running and some crying.--probably crying for mom though. I heard that they cant get a cold but the flu is possible.
Of course might not be related but is litter perfumey? What food is he on?

Take him to a vet. I got my baby Dizzy from a bad pet store. Her eye infection was so bad her eye was swollen shut. The owner was going to send her back to Marshalls mill. Over my dead body! So I purchased her and took her to the vet and got her treated.

Also, what litter do you use in the litter box/cage? I used care fresh until the eye infection cleared up. The way the wood stove pellets crumble I think it irritated the eye more.

any news ? you can release the eye by simply boiling some water add a tiny bit of salt let it cool to luke warm using cotton wool balls dip in and wipe the crust gently from the eye use a clean cotton wool ball each time until removed then dry using a dry one but you need to see a vet to treat the cause hope this helps take care bye for now Bev

Sorry it took so long to reply!! So I haven't found him a vet et. The places I've called claimed to only do a healthy ferret check, no sick ferrets. How does that make any sense?! But I'm still calling around. His eyes haven't gotten worse, but not better either. I took him in the shower and I just held him in there with the steam and it seemed to help loosen it up. He's doing well in terms of playing normally etc. His poo goes back n forth. I'm starting to wonder about a possible allergy. He's using the care fresh newspaper litter, no perfumes. Hes on Marshall food currently. Im looking into better options for food that don't have corn products in it. He's staying hydrated though, and eating fine. Hopefully I'll find a decent vet soon.

If you can buy conjunctivitis eye drops for humans, they can be used to help with his eyes, animal medications are the same as human meds but have just been diluted.

I was debating that actually. I used to work a vet so I know a lot of the ins n outs of cat/dog vet medicine. Just nothing about ferrets. Sorry for the yucky picture, but does this look like watery/seedy or just loose? This is since yesterday

Blah. Okay, I can't quite pinpoint which one it really looks like to me. It's not foamy but not super watery and only slightly and occasionally mucusy.

Either way I know I need to get him into a vet.
