I posted a little bit about this on the Facebook page, but I thought I would cross - post it here as well.
My husband & I go camping every year during the first week of June before the kids get out of school. We live in Ontario (Awenda, about 2 hours north of Toronto if that helps). So the weather is usually high of 20°c during the day, and a low of 10°c at night as a general range. We don't bring the dogs, as being outside (in the tent of course) overnight stresses out my Doxie & makes him bark like mad. So we send them off the grandma & grandpa's, where they get spoiled rotten. Ferrets don't bark, so we're excited to give it a shot camping with them.
We figure we will take them hiking in the morning, then put them away for a nap while we go kayaking for a fee hours (3 hours max). Then take them to the beach to play in the sand, dabble in the water, and slay some crayfish. Then relax at the site, where we have a monster playpen.
However the playpen nor the tent is secure for enterprising ferrets, lol! We drive a 2010 Toyota Prius (hatchback - trunk is open to body of car). So what we're thinking is this:
The Prius can be left on, key inside & locked. It is fully on, and cycles through battery mode & gas powered until we shut the car off. Which means we can thermo control the car, mostly AC during the day, maybe heat overnight if it gets too cold. It will do this for hours no problem. (I actually slept in the Prius with my hubby while in Florida, with the AC blasting). The hatch will hold a reasonably large cage, which they'd only be in overnight, shower/bathroom, and during our morning paddle. They will be exhausted from all the adventures & sleep like the dead when caged (hopefully).
My family has had Prius' my whole life (the one I slept in just this week is 2008, with 250,000km on it). My parents drove theirs the coast of Newfoundland & Labrador, slept in the car whole trip. Mines newer, less km. So I have zero concerns about a malfunction.
I'd love to hear some feedback & any pointers on camping with ferrets
