That is so cute:)). I am not very good at interior decorating the ferret nation cage. Mine is more of the mimalist look, but people enjoy making their cages pretty, and they r cute to look at. I tried getting ideas from people who decorate the ferret nation for their rats--- very amazing at what people did. Not good at interior decorating.....story of my life lol. My cage is several different colors and I use bath mats (no rubber on the bottom) for the floors of the cage and pillow cases, padded pillow shams, and cheap baby blankets from Ross for bedding. I would like one of those nicely decorated cages but what I have at the moment works for Oxley and me. I am going to start look at the rat cages more, they really are well done. BTW I love the minimalist look hah I'm pretty sure mine is minimalist too.

I use hammocks to support getting up or down from all the shelves, running from under the shelf to the opposite wall, and hooked with shower curtain hooks

I use hammocks to support getting up or down from all the shelves, running from under the shelf to the opposite wall, and hooked with shower curtain hooks I like that idea and every rat cage setup I looked at did the same thing. I just needed a quick fix so I can make him a hammock to attach like that. The one he has is way too small to connect from the shelf to the other wall. I feel bad with his current setup because he likes to hang his head while he sleeps. This is him last night when I pulled his cage cover off to get a peak at him Laying his head on the ramp.

That is actually a good set up you have there as it helps give him a nice dark area to sleep in But if you want a make shift hammock just use a pillow case and hook it in the same manner as the hammocks.

Sherry That's what I was thinking about doing, busting out the sewing machine, old linens, some grommets and going to town on it for fun lol. I have way too much fun with his cage. Do you think I should add a second cage to this one when I get another ferret? I don't know how much space they need.

You certainly can if you want. That would give them a double wide. Although it all depends on how much out of cage time they get. For a pair of ferrets who are out several hours a day a single FN level is fine.

Class is about to start and I'm worried about my schedule. MWF I will only be gone 3 hours (10-1) so it's no big deal. Tue&Thurs I will be gone for eight hours a day (9-5). I plan on waking up early and letting him run for 2 to 3 hrs around the house before I leave but I haven't even left him for that long in his cage during the day (Just at night).

I wouldn't worry too much about the drop from the shelf to a deck in a Ferret Nation. There's only so much you can do. This is Yoshi after one attempt. He jumped from the corner of the futon to the open cabinet door. He actually made it clean a couple times.

We had to put our boxspring and mattress on the floor, because on Day 2 Floki found a way to climb inside the boxspring. Our house is a little cold in the winter, so we're all huddled into one place for warmth, for the time being. (Floki gets put into his cage when we have the heater on, as for some reason he's taken to trying to climb inside the propane burner, but we don't keep him there for long.) The 'bed', as it were, is now around a foot tall, and he can scramble onto it and sort of slides off it on his belly. Is this safe for him? He doesn't seem any worse for wear for his trips down, and quite often if I catch him wanting down I lift him down.
On a related note, what is the best way to lift a ferret? Is there a particular angle/do they like their feet being supported, etc? Thanks!
Edit: He also occasionally slips from the top of his cage to the bottom. It's a shorter fall than the bed. When we finish building the proper one we're making for him, after having skimmed this thread, I'll try to make sure there's as little chance of him falling off the top as possible. Maybe only having gaps where the ramps are?

He will be fine with the bed The danger is when they flop over and twist the spine. And when picking him up just be sure he isn't dangling for too long. If you have to scruff for medicines etc make sure his bottom is supported.
