anunnaki well I really started closing it off because the boys were stashing so much and in so many new locations I was getting uninvited guests. So to try cut back on that problem and the jumping, I closed off the cage.

Ferrets are absolutely fearless. I will put my hand on their back as they slide of the couch so they don't flip over, but I have a pic of Yoshi jumping a 3 foot gap. I know of at last one ferret that fell from the top shelf of a tall purple cage and broke her neck.

Well after reading all of these stories Oxley scared me to tears last night. I heard his normal plop off the shelf so I jumped up to check on him and he was just laying at the bottom eyes closed (he always goes straight to his litter pan). I stayed calm turned on the lights and open the cage and he stayed that way while I gently touched him. I didn't want to hurt him further if indeed he was hurt so I kept it gentle. FINALLY he yawned and curled up in a ball, he had a case of the ferret dead sleep. Needless to say I pulled him out and burst into tears....and he stayed asleep hah. I was going to pull his shelf out completely but then I noticed I could make it super low to the floor until I get to town today to buy something to fix this problem.
I'm wracking my brain trying to think of something safe to use to stop him from doing this, any ideas? Mine so far are mesh (husband wants to cut up a laundry sack...scared he will hook a nail on it), netting (scared he will get caught in it), and now plexiglass.

our bed is really tall and we have wood floors in there. How in the world did she climb all the way up there (desk chair)?? Read more: holisticferret60.proboards.com/thread/19902/ferret-jumping-falling-high?page=1#ixzz3x9UUtQ7rOur bed is tall too. All our boxsprings have some shreds around the them from ferret claws. i think she climbed the chair by way of the computer case on the floor. Although chair is leather, the back rest slightly tilts backwards and it has some cushiony padding. Just my speculation on that. Haha never mind, I think the link popped up because you partially quoted me.

I know of at last one ferret that fell from the top shelf of a tall purple cage and broke her neck. The hand on the back is a great idea! We have really tall couches (my feet only come halfway to the ground when I sit on them) so I don't let Oxley up here. Maybe I will consider it when I get an area rug and I can use your hand on back idea Can you post the 3' gap picture?? That is so sad, I'm thinking about eliminating that open gap that Oxley falls from in the FN cage completely. Maybe make him a really large hammock, or put up a net that he can play in and only leave room for the ramp. Either way I need to fix the problem by this evening because it is causing me to worry a lot.

abbeytheferret6 I didn't get a picture of him falling but I do have this older one showing how he likes to sleep on the shelf and then you can get an idea of what I mean about him just sliding head first off of it.

However, he slides off of it awake too! It is his fast/lazy way of getting to his food and litter pan.

That is so cute:)). I am not very good at interior decorating the ferret nation cage. Mine is more of the mimalist look, but people enjoy making their cages pretty, and they r cute to look at. I tried getting ideas from people who decorate the ferret nation for their rats--- very amazing at what people did.

Thank you! That has actually given me an idea. People are using really large hammocks to cover the gap and they hang low to the floor below. Oh, and maybe adding a second staggered shelf like some of those do!

I was just about to suggest a hammock I just use towels, or old shirts and just hook them with zip ties and shower hooks. You can cut that sort of thing to the size you need. If you want it to go right across the cage, I suggest an old pillowcase.

If you want it to go right across the cage, I suggest an old pillowcase. I just rigged up an old pillow case! I didn't think about shower rings. What I did was temporary mainly because I enjoy messing with his cage hehe. My husband said I like it because it's like a doll house lol. What I did just left an opening to his ramp and above that I put his hammock. So far it works and it makes his sleep area even more cozy. You can see my cat trying to steal food in the first pic :face:
