Hi everyone!
I'm posting this here to see if I can get more input than on my unofficial switching thread here
Please keep in mind that I DO plan to take her to the vet this week, tomorrow if possible. The purpose of this thread is to get input on possible illnesses and what kind of tests to request.
Summary at the end in case you don't have the time to read through everything.
Koi is almost 4 years old and I've had her for over 3 years. She was my first ferret, along with one other female because you can never get just one
She is a Marshall ferret from the petstore, no previous owners.
She has never had any health issues or injuries.
She has been on raw for almost one month and has had no problems.
For protein I have been alternating between chicken and beef. The last batch, made on the 18th, was using a different brand of ground beef, rather than the "stew beef" chunks I got last time. It's therefore possible to be an allergy to something from the source of the ground beef, but not beef itself.
I was sick the last week (roommates, ugh). I thought it was a cold, although since it lasted so long it might have been a moderate form of the flu. It's therefore possible it's viral or coccidia.
She is the only one showing signs of being sick, and no new animals or diet changes introduced other than the ground beef. I don't believe it's infectious.
She is showing some signs of insulinoma, and I fully intend to have BG checked.
The last 3 days or so she has been more tired, gradually. Yesterday she was not able to stay awake for more than about 10 minutes, even though the other 3 wanted to play.
Yesterday through today she has had green, explosive diarrhea, and literally bolts to the litterbox and can't hold it once she's in there. The most recent ferrets I have had (all together and bonded) for 2 years, so it's not ECE. The last one was formed, brown/gray, mucousy. Possibly just switching poos.
Today she started vomiting. I can't tell if anything ACTUALLY came up, but I believe so. It was dry heaving, coughing, then her swallowing and slightly grinding her teeth. Anything that came up didn't leave her mouth. She has done this twice, the second time was just dry heaving.
She has been zoning out a lot. She will stare at nothing, not responding to my movement or voice, for 2-3 minutes.
Last night she was making a coughing/crackling sound. I recorded it and it's posted to my switching thread. This happens frequently, every 5 minutes or so. Not as much today. I gave her olive oil and a pea-sized amount of vaseline in case it was fur.
She has been wheezing and it sounds very hard to breathe.
She had trouble swallowing even small pieces of soupie the last time I fed her.
She has lost about 2 oz in the last month last time I checked. She is already underweight.
Her intestines sound very gassy right after she eats.
This morning her mouth was noticeably twitching, moving up enough to show her gumline, for about 30 seconds.
Her hind end is very wobbly and unstable, though she is still able to walk. She has not fallen.
She has been more aggressive/irritable since yesterday. Not nippy, but aggressively digging, even the carpet underneath another ferret sleeping.
Yesterday she ate 3 oz, today she has eaten less than 1 oz. I have been feeding her about every 3 hours so far today.
I am calling in the morning to get an appointment asap, and will cancel my plans without hesitation. It's one of the ones recommended on here, and it is 2.5 hours away, so I would like to get everything in one trip if at all possible. (Dougherty Vet Clinic in Duluth, MN)
What should I bring (stool sample?), and what should I request be done?
Summary:
Symptoms: lethargy, diarrhea (possibly unrelated), small amounts of vomiting, zoning out, coughing (possibly unrelated), labored breathing/wheezing, trouble swallowing, weight loss, digestive noises, mouth twitches, back legs wobbly, aggression.
Assumed possibilities: Insulinoma, bacterial overgrowth, coccidia, flu/viral.
What are other possible illnesses? What tests should I request? What should I bring?
