Hi,
Before I start I'd just like to say how fantastic this forum is, I've already got so much useful information from it but now I need to ask some specific questions, hopefully you'll be able to help ...
Over the past 2 weeks I've been switching my ferrets from a kibble diet to a raw/prey diet and so far everything is going well and I've been able to get rid of the kibble completely now but I do have a few questions.
I've made a meal plan based on this chart holisticferret60.proboards.com/thread/17989/balancing-frankenprey-diets-prey-grinds
*whole chicken includes feathers/head/organs etc.
I'm currently giving them meals of 500g (18 ounces) for all 13 which works out over a day of 75g (3 ounces) average per ferret which works out at 7.5% of the average body weight for the ferrets.
Weight wise since I started on Raw/Prey all the ferrets have gained weight, however it's hard to tell if this is just the winter weight gain or due to the diet, I'm monitoring them weekly just to make sure they are doing ok. Is this weight gain something I should expect to see as they get a better diet, they are certainly more active recently.
So far everything seems to be going well but I do have a couple of questions I hope you can help with.
1) Does the menu I've got them on cover a sufficient amount of protein sources, I'm slightly concerned that with chicken, duck, quail and pigeon there is a lot of bird in the diet, is the Guinea Pig/Rat, Beef and Rabbit enough to counter that ?
2) I feed the ferrets when I leave for work at 4am and when I go to bed at 10pm as they are free roam and they do stash food (especially under the bed) so at the moment they have 500g (18 ounces) to last 18 hours and another 500g (18 ounces) to last 6 hours. Should I look at changing the amounts of each meal so the Morning meal is 750g (26 ounces) and the evening meal 250g (9 ounces), obviously if I do this it will mean I'll have to change the evening meat and organ/heart meals from once a week to twice a week to keep the proportions the same
Any help you can give me would be greatly appreciated .
Dom
