Odin had to have his opposing canine dealt with. I surprised that they didn't figure that out when they removed the other tooth. If it's rubbing it will create a mouth ulcer ciao

Heather, did Odin's other canine have to be removed, or did they blunt it? I called my vet about it and they said they probably wouldn't be able to file it and would have to pull it. I'd rather file than pull when it's a healthy tooth. I was told to keep an eye on it, as he's probably getting used to the extra space in his mouth. Which he does seem to be learning to put his tooth inside instead of over his lip, but still... when he yawns, it goes into his lip. Looks like I'm going to need to do something here. *sigh* What about something temporary until then? You know that wax you put over braces and sharp teeth to keep them from cutting up your mouth? Would that help in the mean time?

I'm not sure you could safely put that wax in his mouth without him eating it.. I use to have that stuff, though it does look like plain white wax, no coloring or scents or anything like that.. I'm not sure how that would be on him if he swallowed it.
I can't really think of anything... maybe you can find someone that does animal dentistry? Maybe they can use that kind of plaster that we use for fillings and just made the tooth not so pointy? That's all I can think of.

They should be able to blunt it without having to pull it. Doesn't make any sense.

I don't get it either Sherry. Would have probably went better if I could actually talk to the vet on the phone, I had to go through the receptionist that picked up. He's probably going to have to go back Friday. Or I could talk to my dog/cat vet, see if they might could file it down. It'd at least be cheaper that way. Considering I just spent $150 to get his tooth pulled and it would cost me another $150... grrr.

He's still going to have to go under anesthetic to have it done. No way a fuzz is going to hold still while a vet files his tooth!

Oh yeah, I know he would. But it wasn't the anesthetic that was expensive, that was only $30. It just seems like $300 is a bit much for a tooth pull and a tooth file... ya know? Not that he isn't worth it, I just feel like I'm getting ripped off.

I'm not sure how that would be on him if he swallowed it. I believe they make it out of just paraffin wax, so I'm thinking if I used a tiny amount just to cover that tooth tip, if he swallowed it it would probably just pass on through. But maybe someone else could shed some light on this? This was my hubby's idea, and I thought it wasn't too bad if it keeps him from destroying his lip until I get him back to the vet.

To be honest, even if it didn't cause problems for him, I'm thinking it would likely come right off again, especially if he felt like anything was on there. Could well be wrong, though!

They didn't file Odin's tooth, they clipped it. It took a matter of seconds. His first tooth (the one that caused all the problems) he broke off at the root, doing some cage wars with Fun-Go. It didn't seem to bother him but the other tooth coming up was slashing his upper lip apart. This is when I met my present vet, in an emergency situation (go figure : She basically, clipped the offending tooth and filed the sharp edges so that it wasn't cutting into his lip. It was sensitive for a few months (it didn't stop him from hunting, though he did have to adjust his style a bit). It made me cringe and I was uncomfortable with it in the beginning but it worked. As she pointed out, the clipped tooth wasn't clipped any shorter than they would have broken it off in a cage war normally. Odin is the only fuzz that I've ever had who broke a tooth off at the root. It wasn't expensive and as she pointed out to pull the tooth was going to cause him grief in the long run. I was happy with how it came out and Odin was happy too ciao

Ok, I've talked to two different vets now and I'm getting generally the same answer. Since he just had his tooth pulled, it's basically very swollen and he doesn't have the full function of his lip back so that is why he keeps "biting" it. It's going to take about two weeks until it heals up and he should not have any problems with it after that. *fingers crossed* They've had other ferrets do the same thing and after they heal from the surgery they don't have any problems. So I'm going to wait this out for two weeks, see how he does, and then we'll go from there if it's not getting any better.

Well, Bomber's "crater" is healing up nicely, so this morning I gave him his last bowl of soup and he's going back on whole raw. He had gizzards the other night and did great with those. He almost got in a fight over one with Evie; I think he's missed his normal raw! lol! I think he's also regaining the use of his lip and isn't slicing his lip nearly as bad with his lower canine. I'm glad, I was worried we'd have to do something about that one. I talked to two vets and they both said it could take two weeks for him to get used to it, so this is good! Since he's feeling better, I'm thinking about letting the weez have their evening romp in the apartment.
