What a work load
Since I have been rescueing animals since I was 16, and lately I've started to have support and volunteers help, I decided to gather a group of people and start working on opening a rescue in Mallorca for exotic animals. Until we have the money to rent a proper building for it, my house and a friend's will be keeping all the little animals we find.
Why only for exotics? Technically we will also be taking in cats, but there is already plenty of rescues and shelters for dogs and cats, a bit too crowded since they are full, but they at least have help. Exotics, on the other hand DO NOT have a proper shelter or rescue center, and many times some of these shelters will take them in anyways and they die in a matter of days because they don't have the specific needs or vets for them.
Many people got mad at me because they believe an exotic animal shelter will promote having non-pet animals as companions when clearly many should be in the wild. Although I agree with them, many of these animals CANNOT be re-introduced into the wild and streets are not a place for any animal wild or domestic. If we get any wild animals, for example racoons o wallabys were quite popular and you will find a stray one once a year or so, they will be sent over to a specific sanctuary in the mainland for that particular species. Also, many exotic animals ARE domestic anyways like most rodents, ferrets and iguanas/bearded dragons can be happy with propper housing and diet. We are working on an educational programme too, where we will do talks in events and schools (probably it will be me hahaha) to teach people about animal respect and what is acceptable to keep at home and what conditions each exotic type of pet needs to be happy in captivity. I will be taking some of our rescues to these events to tell people about their case and promote adoption, spaying and avoiding pet shops.
Right now we are having trouble with the bureaucracy of having a shelter but I am hopeful that we will be able to go through and open it up. The good thing is, we have an exotics vet on our side who will be helping us, but will not agree to be OUR own personal vet (not yet lol) but at least we will have discounts when we bring in animals, unless the government feels like giving us a hand at vet bills
Rescued pets we have right now:
My friend: 5 ferrets and 2 cats
Me: 2 guienea pigs, 1 chinchilla, 1 dumbo rat, 2 kittens, 2 bunnies
One of the kittens I'm taking care of was found saturday, during the rainstorms we were having. She was soaking wet in a puddle of mud with hipothermia, respiratory problems, black discharge in the nose, ear mites, ticks and fleas. She was really bad, but surprisingly I raised 250€ for her treatment and she survived we couldn't be happier!
