I was considering, once I get the ferts to eat fish, trying canned tuna in water. Granted I know canned tuna is cooked, but is it still ok to feed every once in a while like maybe to sub for a meal like twice a month or something? I'm a coupon freak and I know I could stock up on tuna when it goes on sale and was wondering if this could be another meal option. I know a lot of people feed sardines and I have a couple cans but the ferts are not eating fish yet so I can't feed it to them yet. I'm going to start them with feeder gold fish when I get a chance first since I know with my ferts, the prey drive in them is what kicks them into eating any type of food. they wouldn't touch mice until I gave them live mice a few times. now they will take frozen thawed no problem. Any way I'm getting long winded ;D Basically all's I was asking was is canned tuna ok and how frequently can I feed it?

I don't see why you couldn't give them the odd meal of it. I'd say no more than once or twice a month, simply there's not going to be a lot of nutrition in it, but it won't hurt them. Just watch the ing. list for salt, etc.

I think they might make some with low sodium. Or the should at least. I'll have to check. I know they make low sodium just about everything else. How much sodium would be too much?

I tend to err on the side of caution, and don't give anything with salt in it.

be carefull with store bought gold fish and feeder fish you really never know what nasty chems they are useing in the tanks that dont hurt the fish but can effect mamals .. ferts have a high metabolism and small organs which can be effected by small amounts of toxins ..... for enrichment purposes every couple of months you should be fine

I bought some tuna today (from Walmart) I was so excited, I checked all the brands for ones with no salt to no avail. So I just got some in water, I just more or less want them to taste it, it's a very small can and I plan on letting them each have a third to just taste it.

I heard there may be mercury in large ocean fish like tuna (and swordfish) I use Sea Pet oil which is deodorized and certified free of heavy metals. Just a thought to mention........low on the food chain is safer
