my understanding is that ferrets are supposed to get hair ball prevention. the stuff i bought says use in ferrets over 6 months. my oldest girl, (the only one old enough to have it), HATES it. is there something natural like maybe some sort of oil that i could use instead? if so how much, often and what is the safty age. i have a 1yr old, 4-5 month old and an 8 wk old.

Pumpkin?? What are you feeding? Raw? Prey? You don't need to do this whole lax thing as much ciao

I use extra virgin olive oil and pumpkin daily as a hairball remedy. About 1 tsp of each per ferret. The EVOO is also a preventative of ulcer causing bacteria.

I use canned raw pumpkin and Tomlyn's natural hairballs remedy. It is sugar free, petroleum free, etc.

I tend to just use about 1/2 tsp of pumpkin per ferret daily. If it's shedding season, I up the pumpkin, and add in some lax a couple of times a week til it's over. Then it's back to the straight pumpkin

as far as what I'm feeding..... we are working on going from kibble to whole prey and raw diet. as far as the olive oil, can coconut oil be used instead? we have that in the house since that's all I use.

I don't see why not. But the advantage of Extra Virgin Olive Oil is the anti-inflammatory effect it has. Not sure the coconut oil would do anything.

I don't think it's necessary to use a hairball preventative if you're feeding whole prey on a regular basis. Mine get mice and DOC every third day, and I haven't used a hairball preventative since I started feeding mice about 7 years ago.

Yeah I could see how feeding whole prey would make a hairball preventive unnecessary. Can't wait til I can get whole prey for my kids

I just wish I could afford to feed whole prey that often
