Good Morning Friday we will leave for vacation. The Mentors all know that I will be gone. Continue posting, and they will check in. If you need medical advice, tag Sherry or Heather Math questions, tag GFountain Anything else, tag Celene. Technical or Whole Prey feeding questions, tag Bitbyter Ferret Math in a different form ahhaha Finding old threads and editing sounds so time consuming, why not just have it in the one place like as a sticky like you do with other useful things~ ^u^
The Forum dates back to about 2008. So depending on where and how someone searches, old threads pop up sometimes. Sticky are always the best, but not everyone knows how to navigate or find a sticky. I got a reply back regarding the crocodile rips. They said they're generally around 20cm long and 10cm wide and can be cut down to size.
That's interesting. I always picture Crocs as giant animals, of course babies and the young would be smaller. The general guidelines are to use smaller animals. Those bones are not as strong or likely to be an older animal with old bones which can splinter. There is a post about that, and when I finish some errands, I will post it for you. I believe it's in our thread, but I have a few things to do and not enough time this morning. I would have done the same. ;A; I probably wouldn't dare go anywhere near the water to begin with. (Paranoid about big creatures with sharp teeth who swim in water)
I love swimming in the ocean. I grew up near the ocean and lived on the beach several times throughout my years. The movie Jaws changed my blissful swimming into watchful swimming. I once watched someone catch a six foot shark in water that was up to my knees. I'm not going to let that stop me though. The ocean is too wonderful. It was a very long read. It was quite amazing information as well. Not only has it got a step by step guide, but it also explains about the meats in detail. I wasn't aware on parasites and such in meat. I might do some research and check up on anything for my area just incase. I might print this out. It would be good to keep it in my ferret folder~ ^^
Parasites do tend to be uncommon in Ferrets. That's not to say that it can't happen. Usually new ferrents will freak out over parasites only to find that some fly laid their eggs in some poop. (giggle) They're just about ready to come out to play:: It was very cold last night so I put an extra blanket on them so that they could be nice and cozy. They're such little cuties. >3< They should be getting their tunnel and other toys soon in the mail. That should keep them busy and have alot more fun at playtime~
Happy Happy Fun time. They are so cute and you're having such a good time with them. I saw the sweetest blaze yesterday. We had to stock up on Ferret food and afterwards, popped into a Pet Store. This little fellow is a Waardy, and probably deaf. He was young, and looked rather befuddled. He couldn't come home with me, right before we leave for vacation. However, If I come back and he is still there, well then Paul and I may have to have a Ferret Math discussion. When you connect with one, you never forget them. This little one needs me. :wave3:

I was suppose to reply again this morning but I ended up falling asleep again My roommate did the shopping early in the morning and I told her what meats she could get. She said there was no frozen quail available so that was unfortunate. ;n;. I said get some small bone in meats other than chicken wings or necks and she ended up getting beef brisket bones and ox tail. The bones unfortunately are very large and even if I could chop up the bone into smaller sizes it was just too hard for me to do. So I decided instead of wasting the meat that I would get all the meat off both the beef and ox tail and use it for muscle meat instead. Ox tail meat. I can give the larger bones to my dad so he can give them to my doggies at his house. She also got 2 x Ox heart, which smelt very horrid at first. I ended up chopping it up and bag/label/freezing it. It was pretty big for a heart. I was so surprised by the weight. I think it was 13 ounces per heart.. There was also a large pork cutlet, but the single bone in that meat was too big and too tough for me to chop up so i just used the meat and did the same bag/label/freeze. Pork sizzle steaks, which were very nice and easy to cut into slivers. Lamb Kidneys which she thought were livers but its still pretty good organ wise. Since lamb is usually pricey, she managed to get it on sale. I had asked her to look for goat meat if possible also, but she had said it wasn't available. *sigh* Oh and also Beef Mince. It seems unfortunately we couldn't get an appropriate bone in meat this week, but I do have chicken necks in the freezer. I got some money form my Redbubble sales (tshirts etc) so that extra $50 went towards getting 10 x Mice. I think I got a larger size this time so it would be classed as a meal. Next week I'm going to try and get some new bone in meats (in 7 days) so I can get rid of the chicken but for now I'll have to use the chicken necks at least until this friday. I should get the mice tomorrow or friday morning, and they would be a meal. My last plan is striked out and then from Wednesday onwards will be my updated plan based on what meats my roommate had gotten. Saturday. (B+M) AM- Chicken Slivers. PM- Necks.
Sunday. (today – M+B) AM- Chicken Slivers (mashed) PM- Necks.
Monday. (O+M+B) AM- Liver/Kidney/Hearts. (1/4 of L+K) PM- Chicken Necks. (Mashed/Crushed)
Tuesday- (B) AM- Necks. (Crushed Slightly) PM- Necks. (Crushed Slightly, Hopefully in chunks this time)
I'm going to buy Quail next week. Since I cannot get it in store, I'll order it instead and I should have it on Wednesday. It seems alittle unorganised at the moment, But I'm still trying to figure out the best possible plan that suits both the ferrets and my budget. It should come together in no time. ^^
Thats about 4-5 Muscle Meat. (including a full heart meal) 8 Bone-In Meats. 2 Organ Meals.
I plan on ordering around 12 Quails, so that would last a while in a balanced plan. ^^ I'm also going to order, Duck Hearts & Duck Livers so I can scrap chicken hearts and livers out. I might also try and get some Quail eggs. ^^ I'm off for now. I'm alittle sleepy and its time for playtime before I go to sleep early. ^^ bye~

I saw your post about the Oxtail smelling yucky, I haven't smelled it before, so I don't know if that's normal.
One small note on your menu. You have young ones and so you want to be on the higher end of the Bone Meals. Dusting the muscle meats with bone meal powder is a good idea and you might consider that until they are a year old. For now, we want them to have a good amount of calcium.

Great, that will help with bone in meals. Otherwise, your menu looks good. You will have a good variety of proteins.
Good night. :wave3:

Good Morning Morning! (night~) Oopsies, You replied before I did so i didn't see your reply until I posted. hahahaha. Friday we will leave for vacation. The Mentors all know that I will be gone.Continue posting, and they will check in.If you need medical advice, tag Sherry or HeatherMath questions, tag GFountainAnything else, tag Celene.Technical or Whole Prey feeding questions, tag Bitbyter Have fun on your vacation!! I wish I could go on a vacation~ Maybe I'll set something up at home and pretend I'm at some nice beach--- then along comes a carpet shark, Ahh off the carpet! Not the feeet~ Thank you for telling me who to tag. ^^ Hopefully I can survive without you for a short time. Just kidding, I should be fine and now I know who to ask if I have any specific questions or concerns. ^^ The Forum dates back to about 2008. So depending on where and how someone searches, old threads pop up sometimes. Sticky are always the best, but not everyone knows how to navigate or find a sticky.I think I've finally figured out how to surf the forum. I've been thread stalking alot lately. Even when I don't have a concern and am not searching for answers, I find it nice to read other threads. Information is delicious~ That's interesting.
They can grow very large in size. In the wild, little baby crocodiles end up being eaten or killed so, Even though they can grow big, its not an easy life being born a crocodile baby. ;A; I remember watching a doco on them and a big momma croc went away from her nest for a short period of time and within that time another large female comes along and kills all the hatchlings and eggs. Crocodile moms can be very protective and I felt my heart breaking when I watched as the mom was trying to get back in time to save her babies, but it was too late.;n; After the crocs hatch, its very tough for them. First they need to get to water safely, and then next, don't get eaten by other crocs. Alot of the time, its pretty much 1 crocodile baby surviving out of 20-40 hatchlings. ;A; I love swimming in the ocean. I grew up near the ocean and lived on the beach several times throughout my years. The movie Jaws changed my blissful swimming into watchful swimming. I once watched someone catch a six foot shark in water that was up to my knees. I'm not going to let that stop me though. The ocean is too wonderful.
Jaws did the same for me too! I love sharks, they're great animals but I am terrified of them. They recently caught/killed a 13 feet long tiger shark. (http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/worldnews/australiaandthepacific/australia/11797904/Monstrous-shark-caught-in-Australia-as-surfers-call-for-cull.html) I feel kind of sad about it... ;n; Parasites do tend to be uncommon in Ferrets. That's not to say that it can't happen.Usually new ferrents will freak out over parasites only to find that some fly laid their eggs in some poop. (giggle)Thats good to hear. But like you say, it's possible so its always good to at least take some precautions. ^^ Happy Happy Fun time. They are so cute and you're having such a good time with them.
They're great~ ^^Yuki doesn't dook much anymore since he was neutered ;n; He sounded so cute when he dooked. He does sometimes, but its not all the time. Haru is starting to be more vocal and making cute little dooking noises. Its adorable!! >3< She bit me alittle hard yesterday but it didn't draw blood. She rarely bites so It's not a major concern. Haru and Yuki both don't really bite which is a great thing. I get hard nips sometimes from Yuki at play, but he's such a smarty and catches on when I say "No biting hard!" I also managed to fix the carpet digging issue with our kitchen. I moved the board further back in the kitchen, So theres some tiles there and its between the dish washer and the fridge. ^u^ As long as they cannot get to the part where the holes under the cupboards are, then I'm very happy. They can't get in between the fridge as well, so its a great thing I managed to find a solution. I don't have any carpet digging now. (so far, hoping I don't jinx it.) I saw the sweetest blaze yesterday. We had to stock up on Ferret food and afterwards, popped into a Pet Store. This little fellow is a Waardy, and probably deaf. He was young, and looked rather befuddled. He couldn't come home with me, right before we leave for vacation. Awh! Blazes are beautiful! I would have loved to take on another ferret! I was speaking with my roommate and we plan on getting another one in the future. Probably not anytime soon, but I really would love to have a Panda. We might get one middle of next year. Having 3 is a max for us (I have a feeling I'm going to probably end up with alot more in the long run- Maybe I should have a business plan (haha~!) I do hope that sweet little blaze is there when you come back~ I would love to see some photos~~~ Anyway, I need to run for now~ Play time awaits, and Yuki sounds to be up and ready for some fun~ Bye bye for now~ Have lots of fun on your vacation!!

But I'm pretty sure it was a normal smell. The meat looked really good and was a lovely dark colour. After a while of chopping, It didn't smell as bad. Maybe its just I was over sensitive to a new meat. I never have smelt Ox heart before. Its my first large heart and first heart to actually chop up. I have a photo of the heart next to a tiny chicken heart. I will upload it later. Its incredible! I haven't got bone meal and cannot get any in store, so Is it okay to use Egg shell powder? I have plenty of that so I could start doing it with their muscle meats from now on. I can't wait for the quails! It's going to be another first for me and for them~ Yay~

It's huge. It looks nice and healthy. Ferrets will avoid food that has turned. At least in most cases, I don't know if they were really starving if they would. But our healthy domesticated ones should. Eggshell powder will work for the short term. Yours will be moving onto regular bone in meals very soon. Bone meal powder has other nutrients, but I'm primarily concerned about calcium for now.

But our healthy domesticated ones should. Thats probably a really good thing about Ferrets. I love that they would turn down anything that is off. I wouldn't ever give them bad food though, because even if they turn it down, I would be too paranoid with the 'what if they eat it and become sick." So nice and fresh foods for them, as it should be. ^^ They're going to be trying so many new foods in the next couple of weeks. I may have to sit down and watch them eat~ I think it would also be a good thing to monitor them as well, incase I can pick up on any intolerances early. (thats if they have any)

Haru has been eating the necks all by her self lately. It's a very good sign, so I'm sure if I can get anther type of neck (thats not chicken) she should be able to easily chew and break bone. ^^ I've been basically just chopping the neck into bite size chunks and it seems she's been doing well with that. I haven't needed to mash the necks. (It was such a work out to get through them. They are very tough.) A full neck or even a half neck still seems to be a bit hard for her. I'm going to put an order in for some bone meal online next week so I should have it within 1-2 weeks.

It's late there, are you still awake?
Sitting with them really does help. You don't have to do it forever, but it's nice in the beginning and as I've mentioned, helps build your bond.
Necks can be tough, so Haru is doing very well. I still smash mine some.
Okay, I'm off to run errands. We have to pack, prep ferret food, pick up some small items and all the other vacation oriented stuff. Paul and I keep kidding that going on vacation is much harder work than simply being retired and hanging out at home. (giggle)

Paul and I keep kidding that going on vacation is much harder work than simply being retired and hanging out at home. (giggle) Haha! I fell asleep I was working on some course work until late (early in the morning technically). I enjoy watching them eat. They're so fascinating. I love it how they lick their mouth eating a satisfying meal. Its adorable. Everytime I have to chop up necks, I keep feeling alittle bad for the neighbours. I think "Am I being too loud... they won't call the police and then I would have to explain 'oh... I was just... chopping some necks... chicken necks....'" That would probably be quite funny... I hope it never happens though Oh yes, you're leaving soon aren't you? It's currently the 13th (or the 12th for you since I'm from the future and all) I'm sure all the hard work packing will pay off~ Then after you have fun and come home you have to do some more hardwork unpacking~ hahaha. I have some more work to catch up on with my course so I shall be offline for the rest of the day (or probably not, since I do feel like stalking more threads later...) Haru and Yuki got a new comfy hammock yesterday and its nice and warm~ They use them once and just end up like "too lazy for hammock, I'll sleep under these blankets instead." Oh well... I have a one sided joy for buying them new hammocks... Okay I'm going for now~ Bye bye~ (Oh I'm also going to log their weight in on Monday as usual)

This will probably be my last post until we get home.
One good way to search on the forum, is to instead use your browser search bar. Type in Holistic Ferret Forum (and a topic like Reishi Mushrooms), that brings up alot of older threads also. It's fun to see the old threads and especially fun to see when Sherry, Katt and Bitbyter were new. The forum format looks so much better now.
I just spend a few hours prepping 12 meals for ferret camp. I included some FDR treats to share and a menu plan. They have their blankets and toys and we have two large travel cages, that are really rabbit cages. I can put a hammock, sleeper, litter box with puppy pad, water bottles and food dish in them. I have their journal and all our contact info, in case the worst should happen and we don't return home. My will is even updated with money set aside for their care. I'm taking my Holistic Ferret Cards with me, and ask Pam to take them to the Ferret Buckeye Bash. That's a big show in Ohio. You should see all of Pam's ribbons.
Speaking of that, PBS has a documentary on Ferrets. It's called Ferrets: the Pursuit of Excellence. It's funny and slightly crazy. Pam is in it. I found it on the computer, if you want to watch it:
Now, it's time to pack me. I'm a bit of a clothes horse, so all my outfits are already set up, I just have to put them in suitcases and keep ferrets out of suitcases. Packing will be quite an experience with all that help.
Keep doing what you've been doing. You're moving along beautifully. I'm hoping that my sister in law or brother in law buy the Wi Fi package on the ship and I can check in, but I probably won't be able to. Hugs to Haru and Yuki, and of course you. See you in two weeks. :wave3:

It's fun to see the old threads and especially fun to see when Sherry, Katt and Bitbyter were new. The forum format looks so much better now.
I like to search the forum and tick the 'display results as threads'. I find it helps me find certain threads so much faster than going through thread replies. ^u^ Looking at different old threads also helps with getting an understanding of someones over all experience and personality. Its very interesting~~

I noticed alot of ferret owners are using rabbit cages for travel cages. Thats actually a really smart idea!
I have their journal and all our contact info, in case the worst should happen and we don't return home. My will is even updated with money set aside for their care. You're ferrets are so lucky to have a responsible and prepared ferrent! I started a bank account so I can put money away over time for emergencies. I would have taken out insurance but the stupid pet insurance places here only insure cats and dogs (and equine) ;n; At least I have an emergency source for money incase of emergencies. ^^
I'm taking my Holistic Ferret Cards with me, and ask Pam to take them to the Ferret Buckeye Bash. That's a big show in Ohio. You should see all of Pam's ribbons. Oooh They have ferret shows? Thats so fun!!

I'll be alright and if I have questions or concerns I know who to turn to. Have fun on your vacation~!! (take lots of photos!)
Hugs to Haru and Yuki, and of course you. See you in two weeks. They're get lots of hugs~

I got an email regarding my recent frozen mice order and it seems the courier can only deliver to my area on thursdays and tuesdays. My order was shipped on Thursday, and I'm told that it will be put in a freezer unil it can be delivered Next Tuesday. So for this week I'll have to temporarily change a few things. Since I didn't get the mice like I was expecting to, today, I ended up giving them Chicken Necks. Mon: ( B) AM: Chicken Necks.y PM: Chicken Necks. I'll switch Monday and Tuesday's Plan.Tue: ( O+ M+ B) AM: Chicken Liver/ Beef Kidney / Ox Heart.PM: Whole Mice.
I'm looking into still getting different Bone In Meats next week. SO hopefully they get delivered in time, otherwise I will alter the plan to fit the circumstances.

I've noticed I post these usually on sunday night, so I'll post it now anyway. ^^ 1. Ferret's name: Yuki. 2. Ferret's weight: 1389g. 3. Ferret has eaten "3.5 ounces" on average per meal.4. Stools: Medium Brown with smooth consistency (Muscle Meats) Slightly dark brown and alittle seedy (Bone-In Meat/Chicken Necks) Dark Brown and smooth consistency (Organ/Heart) 5. Activity levels: Moderate to High levels usually. This week we had a few playtime sessions outside of the usual play time. Usually playtime is in the afternoon/night and at that time we tend to just let them free roam until they feel like sleeping. There was a couple of play times in the morning and I noticed that Yuki had low energy levels and would prefer to find a place to sleep instead of playing. It seemed normal anyway since it wasn't our usual play time for him. At our usual playtime he's always moderate to high levels of energy. My roommate had a friend over a few days ago and I noticed Yuki had gotten shy (Preferred to hide) and wasn't very playful at his usual time. It was strange but very interesting. He's usually boisterous but to see him become shy at a stranger was alittle cute. >3< 6. Weekly menu: Chicken Necks, Pork Slivers, Chicken Liver, Beef Kidney, Chicken Heart. (Egg) 1. Ferret's name: Haru. 2. Ferret's weight: 836g. 3. Ferret has eaten "3 ounces " on average per meal.4. Stools: Same as Yuki. Medium Brown with smooth consistency (Muscle Meats) Slightly dark brown and alittle seedy (Bone-In Meat/Chicken Necks) Dark Brown and smooth consistency (Organ/Heart) 5. Activity levels: Low-Moderate. Haru has been getting more playful over the last couple of weeks which is great to see. She's started dooking at playtime, especially if I hand play with her or rub her belly. Haru runs after people and has stopped ankle nipping. She's not as playful as Yuki, but she's starting to open up alot now in general. 6. Weekly menu: Chicken Necks, Pork Slivers, Chicken Liver, Beef Kidney, Chicken Heart. (Egg) Ferret Notes:Both Haru and Yuki are no longer biting. I've only experienced 2 nasty latch bites between the two and a couple of hard bites. Only the latch bites ever drew blood. I noticed since they started getting their raw diet in order and had appropriate playtimes, that the biting stopped and they managed to figure out what I find acceptable and what isn't. They seem more happier and more lively. Haru's Coat feels soft and silky almost. Its very smooth and I love stroking it. Yuki's coat isn't the same feeling. Its slightly more coarse, but still feels somewhat smooth and soft to touch. Both of their coats have improved alot since they started getting their diet in order. When they first came home, their coats both felt rough and coarse to touch. Even if they had a bath their coats wouldn't improve. They seemed more cranky and Yuki was constantly biting. Haru seemed more lethargic also. There's been alot of improvement and I'm most happy with the fact they seem more happier and overall healthier. It's strange to think that I've had them for about 10 weeks now (about 2 months) but it feels like I've had them for ages. I've been in this mentoring program for roughly 8-9 weeks and I've noticed alot of improvement between both ferrets. Haru who wouldn't dare touch a bone in meat at the start, is now eating them on her own. Speaking of Haru... Her 1st birthday is coming up! Its in 7 weeks. Oh my~ (5th of October) Yuki's 1st birthday is in 3 months. (5th of December). They're growing up so fast. *sobs* Some other things I've noticed. It's coming to the end of winter at the moment and Haru's Colour is lightening in some places while in others it's darkening. Here's some images to show! http://instagram.com/p/6UzIeAvwkG (First image is the current, and the second is before the colour got darker.) http://instagram.com/p/6aCHC3vwiA Little Haru is getting a small mask. Kyaa~ Its adorable!
