Sorry I haven't been around. I didn't know where to turn.
I just found Nax when I went to feed them dinner. I don't know what happened or why. Last night after dinner he was making a bit of a choking sound that stopped my husband and I dead in our tracks, but he did it again a few minutes later but afterwards he seemed totally fine.
I feel like I am half freaking out, half in shock. Did I leave something out that he got into? Did he choke on a piece of bone from the chicken rib cage I fed them last night? Everyone else seems ok.
My husband is at work and won't be home for another hour. I feel sick, I don't even know how to tell him. He is going to break down hard, I know it.
Nax was was my cuddler and would give kisses every time I asked. He was always the mellow. He had a thing for being hand fed. if you put his food in fount of him, he would give you this look that said "I'll take it straight from your hand thank you very much."
I have him on the living room floor right now letting everyone say goodbye.

I would if I could afford it, I don't know how much it costs. I guess that is something to talk to my husband about when he gets home. Nixxie is clearly emotionally distraught. She is hissing and squealing every time Gilly goes up to her. I should add she is normally vocal, but this is different.

Oh no! I am so sorry! I would try to get a vet to examine him and necropsy too. How old was he? I lost my elderly ferret in March to CHF and heart arrhythmia (also suffered with adrenal disease and insulinoma). He started coughing like he was chocking. And then would be ok for quite a while. When I took him in to vet, he had a very enlarged heart and was starting to crash. So I had to make a difficult decision to let him go. I hurt for you right now.

I'm sorry for your loss. Please don't blame yourself. My Uncle Joe and Frank also had CHF, with what sounds like similar coughs. Joe passed in his sleep and Frank was pts. Sometimes it's treatable, but Frank was very weak. If Nax went from a couple coughs to gone overnight, it was just his time. DIP Nax.

I know some vets that do a Free Necropsy to any animal that they have treated, It may be worth it to ask.
My vet in California told me that they do this but this was after Hammie was already buried.
I think a Necropsy would help with closure. However I would also think that is may bring guilt if it reveals that it was preventable. I really don't know what I would do in your situation.

I am so so sorry for your loss, it is so hard when you just find them. Talk to your vet. As bad as it may sound, some will do at least a partial necropsy as a learning experience for vets at the clinic and don't charge. They would at least be able to tell you if his heart looked affected, or a bleed out, things like that. DIP little one, fly free

DIP Nax... so sorry for your loss
Thanks everyone for the information about what happens afterwards. I didn't know they sometimes investigate deaths for free.

Thank you all for our kind words. He was only 3 years. And never had any inkling of health issues. He is the only one who hadn't given us a health scare. I just don't know.
We buried him this morning. We decided against the necropsy. The vet wouldn't be in until tomorrow morning. It was just something we needed to do and get it done with. Plus i didn't see about the possibility of it being done for free and we didn't want to be in a position when money is already tight not to be be able to get care if one of the others fell sick.
We held a small ceremony before my husband had to leave for work. I tried to talk my husband in staying home from work but he felt he had too go in. Honestly, I can't imagine how bad it must be for him having to go in today. I haven't really done much of anything today.
Nixxie and I have been curled up in bed while I read. You can see see the grief in her eyes. She eaten today, and I am really starting to worry about her. I brought her food to my bed just a little bit ago and she perked up for a minute sniffed it, but didn't touch it. She just lays there and stares at me. She is super clingy. This is not like her at all. She also doesn't want Gerri or Gilly anywhere near her. They know something is wrong but still playful. My heart is breaking for her as much as it is breaking for myself.
