Hello all! My ferret Grimm has recently started to roll in his poop and pee. He almost always have poop on him now. He also likes to pee and poop where he eats... I really don't know if this is normal or not... I've had Grimm since March and had not had this problem until last week. How can I get him to stop or is it just something he will always do?
Thank you for reading.

Hi and Welcome to the HFF Ferrets in the wild will often poop on their food to discourage other animals from stealing their food. It's not uncommon to hear of our domesticated ferrets choosing to sleep in a litter box. Have you changed anything, like his litter or his litter box? Is he bored, does he get enough play time and enough time out of his cage? We do have a thread that discusses litter box boot camp. Sometimes a refresher course helps: holisticferret60.proboards.com/thread/108/litter-box-boot-camp

@poncesmom: He is not sleeping in the litter box. He sleeps on his hammock. He just rolls in his poop and pee. I think he gets enough play time out of the cage. I play with him for a good 3 hours most days. Some days are just 2 hours...
@jadeguppy: He is neutered.

Is he an only ferret? An only ferret needs alot of time and attention. You are really only his source of play and stimulation.
The more out of cage time, the happier he will be. Maybe a friend would help.
Ferrets sometimes just have weird habits. Maybe he likes the smell or feeling and texture. Have you considered a dig box for him? A large shallow bin with sand, rice or even dirt would be fun for him.

@poncesmom: He is the only ferret. Grimm loves his rice dig box! :)I'm thinking about getting another dig box for him... So I should play with Grimm more? I thought about getting him a friend, but that's just not possible right now. I'll start playing with him more. He will soon have free rage of my room when I'm home. I just need to ferret proof it. Right now he plays in the bathroom. It's a big bathroom. Thank you for you're help!

My first ferret was an only ferret. Ponce didn't know any different and I was home with him, all of the time. It's hard to play all day, but I let Ponce free roam with me. We did border patrol every morning. We simply walked around and looked at everything. Take Grimm out at various times and let him see what you're doing. If you're in the kitchen, ferret proof a cabinet and let him look around in it. A cabinet full of plastic tupperware or something unbreakable will occupy him. Find various places when you are home and let him be with you. Sit on the floor with a blanket and play the under game. When he goes under the blanket, tickle him from the top. Give him blanket rides. Just find ways to include him when you are home. He will be happier and you build a lovely bond. All my friends with animals said to get Ponce a friend. It wasn't possible for me at that time. However, now that I see my bonded pair play and how much they love each other, I wish Ponce had known that kind of joy. I have five now and to watch them play is to see how much fun they all have together. We can play with them, but there are ferret games we can't play and we just don't know how to dance the wild weasel war dance right. An only ferret tends to be an explorer, so try to find ways to explore with him. I do understand that it's not always possible to have another ferret. You and Grimm can spend time together and Grimm will appreciate as much attention as you can give him.
