I have a ferret whose name is RJ. He is 5 months old. Up until 4/25/2015 RJ was a very active and happy ferret. When I woke up sunday (4/26/2015) RJ has turned into a VERY lethargic and weak ferret.he couldnt walk or eat . well within 3 days (4/24 - 4/26) RJ lost about 95% of his weight and muscle tone. I took him to the ER vet and she told me that she couldnt find anything wrong except that he may be anemic. I have been busting my rear since sunday to today (4/30/2015) to care for RJ. feeding him every 2 hours and giving him his meds. We are now on day 4 and the only progress is hes now able to walk and eat but he still has pale gums and paws and nose. I am at a complete lost as to what I can do to get his color back. He isnt able to keep weight on him. He has been sleeping with me and i hate having to wake up to see this poor baby back to bones... the vet is at a losts of words except to tell me i need to think about euthanasia. I dont want to put him down.. not after he is trying to fight this battle so hard. It breaks my heart. if any one can give me advise as to what i could possible do besides put him down please let me know.

Check our vetting files...you need another vet. Most ER vets are just that, you need a ferret vet or one that is willing to work with you. This is a dire circumstance (you don't need me to tell you this). What tests have been done? What are his stools like? Has he had xrays, barium tests done? Have blockages been ruled out. Those are a few questions off the top of my head. Your little one needs to see a vet, a good, ferret knowledgeable vet NOW...a week ago to be honest but that's how urgent my appeal is to you ciao

different types of blood work, blockage was ruled out (so they say) i took him to a rescue whose been in business for about 15 years and she said that he more then likely had dehydration issues.. and asked me what i fed him, when i told her, she kinda yelled at me and told me to put him on brand name ferret food, and to not take him back to that vet. she said that with a little tlc and the proper diet and antibiotics he should recover. my issue is that when the tests were done. I didnt have a whole lot of money to get every single test done. i am almost to the point where I feel like he may need to be released to a rescue... I just feel like me and him both have tryied so hard and came this far like i shouldnt give up

I second Heather, you need a ferret experienced vet to diagnose your little one properly!
What are his symptoms? Has juvenile lymphoma been ruled out?

Was anything indicated by the blood work? What HAVE you been feeding him? If raw, is it a balanced raw diet? What have his poops been like (solid, semi-solid, totally liquid)?

I think this is already a matter that cannot wait. Rush him to a ferret-vet, before it'll be too late. He needs proper treatment. Grab some recovery formula food (Oxbow Carnivore Care), make a soupie and syringe him. If he is kibble fed, he may dehydrated a lot faster and would need subq fluids, since there is a point when just drinking liquid no longer helps. Keep us posted!

I'm so sorry about your little guy. He will be in better hands with you than with a shelter. Please don't surrender him, that will only compound his stress and he is likely to fail faster. He needs you to be there for him and you as his health advocate. Here are our two vet lists, and if you would like to PM one of us with your location, we can help you find a vet that knows ferrets. holisticferret60.proboards.com/thread/13638/vet-country-stateholisticferret60.proboards.com/thread/6/list-vetAll my best wishes for your little one to recover. I hope you will keep us updated.
