I have two ferrets a little girl (Meeko~ 3yrs) and just got a boy (Pabu~ 2months). And ever since getting my little guy the ferret smell has definitely amplified. I've realised that because I live in Australia, there are barely any ferret supplied, nor any (good) companies that ship here. So Im hoping that someone might have a good dry shampoo and odor neutraliser spray (like the one you spray on the ferret itself) recipe.
I replace their litter tray daily, wash their linen and bedding weekly, and keep them on a good diet. And because it's not good bathing them often I'm hoping a dry bath and spray every now and again will help.
If anyone has something it would be AMAZING!

I don't know of any actual shampoo or sprays for this but I would advise a rice dig box. It's a gentle absorber of oil and odor. It makes them super soft too! You can put extracts in the rice too for a light scent. Do not use essential oil though as those are harmful Extracts can be found in the baking aisle at the market. I used half a teaspoon of vanilla in 40 pounds of rice and my ferrets came out smelling like little ferret sugar cookies. It's good scent stimulation and playtime for them too.

Thanks linsul! That sounds great for them. I've been doing some reading online and seen that a light apple cider vinegar water mixture can be a good deodoriser. So yesterday I made up a solution that was part Peppermint essence (from the cooking aisle), apple cider vinegar, and water. Do you think this would be fine for them? It's all natural ingredients and I sprayed a mist over them both yesterday to see how they would react and they didn't seem to mind.

Peppermint is often used as a deterent. I would be tempted to use vanilla instead. ciao

What Heather said, peppermint is a very strong scent! I've not heard or read anything about vinegar and water sprays so I can't say for sure.

I've been using a Marshall deodorant I purchased at a shop and I would really like to switch to a natural one. Has anyone else tried the apple vinegar and water one?

Is the boy intact or fixed? If he is intact then there isn't much you can do. It is part of them being in season. Males get really smelly, greasy and obsessed about spreading it everywhere they can.

I used to take sliced lemons/oranges and gently simmer them on the stove in water for several hours (or until the slices looked about ready to fall apart) and then slowly add a bit of baking soda. I wait until all of the baking soda dissolves and then strain it into a spray bottle. The straining is important in case you get a little pulp, which will clog your spray bottle. I used this both to clean their cage and to lightly mist on their scent glands and in between baths. They never minded. I did bite training and litter training with vinegar so they detest it now - honestly, both peppermint and apple cider vinegar are very strong smells, and I don't like the smell of the latter at all.

I had another thought (knowing this thread is pretty old) - why not make your own tincture for a odor spray? Something like rosemary, lemon balm, or chocolate mint would make a great scent. The end alcohol content of any tincture is about that of a banana so I wouldn't worry - if it does bother you, though, you can do the extraction twice or use glycerin instead of alcohol...
