Hi and Welcome to the HFF I'm afraid that I'm on the wrong side of the world to help you. I'll tag Thérèse for you, she's in Australia and might be able to suggest something.

I use corn cob litter. It's not fancy, but it gets the job done.

Afraid I'm not going to be much help. Am a user of puppy pads.
Back when I did use litter (mainly started for the cat I had then) I used one made from lucerne (can't remember the name of it but think I got it from Coles). The main reason for choosing it was it was flushable and I lived in a flat at that time, so that was a very important feature. At one stage it was discontinued but I discovered the lucerne guinea pig/rabbit food is identical, so figured if I needed to I could use that (didn't need to, I had a stockpile and by the time I was through it it was back in store). This is going back quite some years and I don't know if it is still available. My ferret (only had one back then) never tried to eat it but I figured being lucerne, even if he had it was unlikely to cause a major problem.
Sorry that's all I've got on the litter front but welcome to ferrenthood and the forum

When I was doing my searching on Australian websites earlier I saw quite a few litters made of lucerne. I didn't post/suggest any of them because I had no idea what it was. (Still don't. Here in Canada lucerne is a brand of dairy products. )

Lucerne is something I think of horses eating. When I was a kid it used to grow in the paddock we agisted our horse and the horses liked it. It is a plant and the litter/guinea pig or rabbit food is little green pellets.

when I googled lucerne plant (just Lucerne gets you the city in Switzerland) I found out it is basically another name for alfalfa

Well I do know what alfalfa is! It doesn't get stinky when peed on?

It's a while back but I have no memory of it stinking but then I don't have the best nose (I tell people I am partially smell deaf, ie. I don't smell a lot of things). Also the litter tray was right near the loo, so whenever there was anything in it I would scoop and flush, so that probably meant whether or not it smellt was reduced too

I have a lousy sense of smell also. I tell people that I don't smell good. That always gets me funny looks. We use puppy pads also. Thérèse apparently we have alot in common. lol

Oh how I wish I had bad sense of smell sometimes... (like when I am in a hotel room with 3 ferrets sleeping in the same room and using their litterbox...)

Agreed @absinthefairy! Their cage (where their litter boxes are) are right beside the couch so if I'm hanging out watching TV or something and one of them poops it gets cleaned up immediately because it's so stinky. Less so on raw, but I'm still pretty sensitive to it. Thankfully their litter boxes are each cleaned multiple times a day so there is never anything sitting around in it for long. The wheat litter actually does a GREAT job of absorbing odors so I never smell pee, but since poop just sits right on top nothing can be done for it

Yep, I have the same obsession with cleaning right away. Plus besides the litterbox in the cage, we have one in every room, since they are mostly free roam (and almost use them all the time - they love NOT using them when we have guests ! ) . I have been following this thread for a while because I am trying to get an alternative to my litter. I use wood stove pellets - which are all nice until they turn into powder and get on everything, and Gizmo starts snorting it, coughs and sneezes and of course chooses to sleep in it to get all itchy. They also managed to powder the pellets in the living room litterbox, spread it all over the room, behind the sofas, and then throw the humidifier off the shelf and spill all the water on the powdered wood, just to make it nearly impossible to clean! (headwall) I used the newspaper stuff before - but Gizmo was eating them so we had to switch. Can't use cat litter or clumping, and can't really find anything else here (like wheat or corn cob)....If there's anyone around Europe who has any suggestions, I'd be soo thankful! I assume Silica is a total no-no?
