Hi everyone! I recently purchased one of the ferret dig boxes from the Drs Foster and Smith website and my ferrets, of course, LOVE it. But my one girl Myka REALLY loves them. Specifically to eat. She'll crawl in, pick one off and then run into a corner to devour it. I usually get them away from her in time but sometimes she'll slip by me and get pieces down. I know that they're supposedly safe but sometimes she throws up a little after eating them. I'm just wondering if anyone else has had similar problems? Short of taking the box out is there any kind of deterant to stop her from eating them? Or is it okay for her to take nibbles here and there even if she vomits? Thanks for taking the time to read!

They are made from corn starch so technically are pet safe. If she is making a point of eating them though I'd think about changing to something else like beans or rice for their dig box.

My girl ferret likes to eat starch packing peanuts also, so I don't let them play with them that often. Though they won't cause a blockage, I'm still assuming that the starches aren't good for ferrets in terms of their diet.

Brilliant, thank you both so much. I'd taken it away specifically because she was constantly going after them and after not having it for a while I thought she might have "forgotten". Not the case. Thank you for your input, I'll go back to using the rice!

Just as an FYI. Starches are turned into sugars by enzymes in saliva. So when she chews on them they start to taste sweet. Like if we eat a cracker, it starts to taste sweet. That may be why she likes them. But with ferrets, who knows what the real reason is.

I had a ferret (RIP) who always wanted those wonder peanuts for her snack time. This was before I learned about raw feeding. I shudder now thinking about what that was doing to her system. I won't use them again, just for that reason. Why take the risk?

You can get pva based packing peanuts these will also break down in water but your ferrets are a lot les likely to eat them as they are in no way great tasting. I used to use them for carp fishing here in the uk. But that's another story altogether. I used to buy big sacks of them and put them in a plastic storage box. Fuzzies loved it.
