I've two treated for ulcers now, neka just incase after blockage/surgery. Zeke after bacterial/possible ulcer.
In neither case was it a definite yes it's an ulcer.
What are the signs and symptoms of ulcers? I know just about any upset can bring them on, I what to know what to look for so I can hopefully catch it before it gets too bad.
Thx

Blood in the poop, mucousy poops, and lack of appetite are signs. But they are also signs of other things as well. That's the hard thing about ferrets.

Teeth grinding, black tarry stools, "coffee grounds" in stools, loss of appetite/lethargy (both signs of pain) Take a tablet of pepcid ac and dissolve in 10 cc/ml of water. Give .25 cc's every 12 hours. Also get carafate from the vet. Gastrointestinal issues usually occur after blockages. Sometimes they take a long time to resolve.

FYI they almost never give a definitive dx. its always "suspected" with ulcers. Ferrets are very prone to having ulcers esp after blockages and during times of stress (caused by moving, a new friend, death of an old friend, Adrenal disease, etc) so when a vet suspects an ulcer, they are probably right.

I've got a call into the vet but thought I'd ask here too.....
How long after being on meds should the stools stop looking so dark? Zeke has been on the ulcer meds for a week now and still not much improvement in stools. They are at least formed but still too dark for my liking. everything else is good, appetite, and energy good.

From what I understand, it can take about 3 weeks to clear up ulcers, sometimes longer.

Oh ok thanks sherry.
Do you know if the meds actually heal the ulcer or just coat/protect it so it can heal on its own?

It's a combination. Antibiotics to help heal the bacteria causing the ulcer, and carafate(or it's like) to coat the tummy, allowing it not only time to heal without interference from the stomach acids, but also to soothe it, causing less pain for fuzz.

Hi I would go with the two month some take less but every ferret is different I would also slip in some natural yoghurt to the diet because the antibiotics are destroying all the good bacteria in the gut take care bye for now Bev aka crazy lady

i just found out today that kidney issues can present like there's an ulcer. was also told that kidney issues will cause bad breath. (this info is too late for my duncan, tho )
run bloodwork to check kidney (and liver) values to rule out a problems there - still treat as if it's an ulcer issue until the results come in, though. if it is ulcer, you're a few steps ahead with getting it under control and, if it's kidney issue, you're a step ahead with getting some kind of meds into the system - not sure what meds are used to treat kidney infections - i assume something stronger than amoxi, tho.
