Olivia was making her hairball hacking noises again last night so I found this petroleum-free hairball medication at my local Petplanet.
It's called: Excel Kittymalt Hairball Remedy Paste (Tasty Seafood flavour)
The active ingredient is: 950mg Mineral Oil per tsp
The inactive ingredients are: Flavor, lecithin, Malt syrup, Mono and Diglycerides, Potassium Sorbate, Sorbic Acid, Water.
Does this look okay to give??? I would just give it during shedding season, which seems to be now.
It's instructions are give daily for 3 days then 1-2 times per week and 1/4 tsp for their weight. Would I just follow that dosing?

From my understanding mineral oil hugely blocks nutrient and mineral absorption. I would not use this as a daily hairball remedy. Emergencies, maybe. Personally pumpkin and olive oil have been more than sufficient here for preventatives

The malt syrup is also unnecessary sugars.

hmmm okay, good to know! I was trying to avoid the petroleum based ones for that reason, darn!
The tomyln natural one miamiferret2 reccommended has these ingredients: Ingredients Soybean oil, hydrolyzed vegetable oil, cod liver oil, flaxseed oil, chicken flavor, vitamin E, lecithin, soy protein, sorbitol, beeswax, maple flavor, methylcellulose, chamomile.
I would have to order it off the internet though.
Or should I just stick to pumpkin and olive oil and just use a petroleum based one for emergencies?

It's up to you. I don't worry too much about petroleum, because it's only used in times of emergencies, and at that point I don't worry about the petroleum - more concerned with the blockage at hand. The tomlyn one seems pretty good, not sure how effective it is in pushing blockages out as I've never used it. I know pumpkin is a life saver and is amazing at getting blockages out. I try to keep the number of supplements and extras to a minimum. For me, pumpkin and EVOO works fine. It might be worth ordering just to have on hand. The main ingredients are soybean oil and veg. oil, so not sure how different though are than olive oil. Might do the same thing.

I would not use the one with malt syrup-that is sugar. I use the tomlyns natural hairballs remedy every other day during shed season. It works well. Raw pureed pumpkin is awesome too.
