Hi, I am looking for the best playpen I can get to sort of attach to the front of a critter nation cage (can't get a ferret nation in the UK, I'm amazed I could find a critter nation). Ideally I'm thinking about having a tarp of something across the floor, with the playpen on top. What is the best playpen and does it come with an escape proof lid? I'm thinking if it is very very secure they could have access to it 24/7 as a cage extension of sorts. I am happy to wire/clip it to the cage even if it means it is more awkward to clean out the cage and litter trays. But need something high quality, sturdy and hopefully pretty escape proof.
Any ideas? I'm looking to buy on amazon.co.uk but will use any uk sites or stores that I can.
Also what sort of lead/leash do you think is best? I think I'm best waiting until I have them to order that because I still don't know what I'm going to end up with (how many, skinny, chunky, small, big or what).
What hammocks are best? I am hoping to make a few, and the ramp and shelf covers since I'm not sure where to order from in the UK and I would like to have a play with our sewing machine, but if there is a perfect hammock or some toys that come highly recommended I will buy them. So any advice?
Thanks

To be honest while that amount of money is doable I am shocked to see that the playpen, with a base and a roof is going to cost me £130. Add in the £230 something for the cage (I was so happy to go on Amazon this morning and see that it has been reduced £30) and then things for in the cage I would prefer to spend a little less.
I'm looking around to see if I can get the Marshall pen cheaper elsewhere. I'm also a little hesitant to buy anything Marshalls brand, are they not the company mass producing ferrets? How do others feel about buying there products and therefore supporting the company? Or am I getting mixed up?
Thanks for the links though, and if I can't find any alternatives I will definitely get these and may end up eating beans on toast for a few weeks haha. (Don't worry I have a separate vet fund should anything happen, but I refuse to use it for anything other than emergencies.)

You don't have to buy that particular one, but just showing the actual playpen. Yes that's the company, but unless everyone in the world (or America) stopped buying ANYTHING from Marshall's, they're going to stay in business. They mass produce most all the ferrets here today, while they are terrible company, not buying a few products isn't going to hurt them in the slightest. I've had to result to beans and toast too

Looking around that is the best playpen for ferrets. Alot of the others have reviews mentioning rabbits been able to just out and since ferrets like to climb I would like some toys in the pen that they could climb while still being low and safe. Hence the lid requirement.
I'm going to talk to my OH before placing the order to see what he thinks.
Again, thanks for your help.

I've seen where people build a wooden frame and then just use fencing to build their own pen. Since you want it enclosed on all sides, this may be the way to go, but you'll want a way to open it up and get into it. I use a couple Marshall pens on top of a tarp and area rug. There are few enough cross bars that my ferrets can't climb out, but as you said you need to make sure there's nothing in there tall enough for them to jump from.

Thanks raynebc. We have decided to try to make something at home, and failing that I will get the Marshall playpen. It defiantly needs a lid, as they will be able to climb up their cage, especially with it being a Critter Nation (horizontal bars) rather than a Ferret Nation (vertical bars). I was amazed to get a Critter Nation in the UK, looked all over for a Ferret Nation but had no luck. I guess there is more demand for a Critter Nation over here.
I will try come up with a method to build a fence/extension to their home. But they will have lots of time outside of their cage, and depending on how well everyone gets along (dog and ferrets) they will have a minimum of an hour in the house (with dog shut away) and then the rest of their out time in the room they will be kept in. I'm also looking to get leads for them to take them out into the garden, while it isn't massive, it is bigger than the footprint of the house and half of it is still overgrown so should be great fun for them to run through.

That's sort of what I was thinking of, but wasn't sure how to put it together. Thank you so much for that link. I might give it a go and see if we can cut a doorway for access to the cage. We are also looking to make a bigger and more secure pen for our hamsters and gerbil, so we can make a shorter smaller one first for them and then try a bigger one for the ferrets.
