I found the kaytee cages are a pain to clean (I had the five level one and replaced it within a year with a double ferret nation),
If you really want to control stashing of food, install a feeding den (dark box or bin with a hole in it) for them to use.

I'm planning on using dark storage tubs (also called bins) as food dens to stop them dragging their meat here there and everywhere. Especially if they take to whole prey, that could get very messy!

I am still trying to figure out what to use or where to put one in the cage we have. It is one of those superpet multi-level extra large. It has three levels and not much room on the ground floor. I have to watch my little guy like a hawk because he likes to drag his chicken pieces into the litter box to eat. I keep pulling them out and.... you know the routine!! lol I really would prefer if he ate in the cage to control clean up. Does anyone have experience with these cages? We currently can't afford to purchase a different cage that would be bigger. I've already checked Craigslist for one and came up empty. I've also seen where others have built their own.

I did have a Kaytee cage. I set it up so that the bottom floor had the litterbox, I used two shelves together (one of them had the hole in the middle for the "slide" that I tossed) to make an entire flat sleeping area...I had another half shelf above that for food/water. It was easy to access through the top door to add food/water. In my current FN, I have a deep rubbermaid dishpan (doesn't have a lid) and I drilled a tiny hole in each corner of the upper lip. I used an empty tin can (large diameter...like from the large cans of fruit). I put it in a pan on the stove and when it was hot, held it to the bin until it melted a hole. Mine has two holes because my three boys got stuck trying to enter/exit at the same time when there was just a single entry. I hung it from the "ceiling" of the cage with shower curtain hooks and they step right up into it from the topmost shelf. I'll try to post a picture in a bit.

I really need to get around to this...the wall behind Remus' cage keeps getting spattered because he shakes his food to tear pieces off. I dread the day when a bit of mouse lands in my coffee...

The hanging den The whole cage (den is at the top right)...of course, the kitties think that all the soft bedding is great, so when the ferts come out, the cats go in...all on their own. (giggle)

My girlfriend and I picked up one of those igloo/castle plastic things at our local petco a while back. It fits nicely under the one level of his cage. I wrapped a piece of dark cloth around it and placed some of his food in there with the hours that he realizes that is where he is supposed to eat.

Well it didn't go as planned! No matter how many times i put food in there he would drag it out and eat it near the litter box. He also managed to get the fabric off it and drag that around as well. I think i need to re think the den some more.
