1. Where did you first learn about natural diets for ferrets?
It's sort of common knowledge to me that ferrets strive on a natural raw diet, but I've learned alot of information on the Holistic Ferrets Facebook group, as well as the American Ferret Association.
2. Please describe the type of diet you would like assistance in switching your ferret(s) to. Be sure to include if you are interested in feeding whole prey (live or frozen-thawed) and if you are wanting to FULLY switch to a natural diet or PARTIALLY. If you are unsure what kind of diet you want to put your ferrets on, please express that and we can help you find the best type of natural diet for your ferret.
Well, I'm not entirely sure what type of diet would be best for my little girl, she is a rescue and has been eating low grade garbage kibble for at least a year. I was thinking about putting her on a partial raw diet. Feeding raw as well as a good kibble like Orijen 90, Wysong, or whatever kibble would be recommended to me.
3. Why are you interested in switching your ferrets to a natural diet?
My little girl is a rescue who came from a pretty terrible home. Eating $5 kibble from Walmart, being bathed weekly with human shampoo, being locked in her cage for possibly weeks at a time, living in a very dirty cage, etc. She is an amazing animal and deserves a MUCH better life than that. Hopefully I can give her the good life she needs. Part of a good life is a good diet. I want my baby on a raw diet for her health and well being.
4. Do you understand that switching your ferret to a natural diet can be a lengthy, arduous process? Its not an overnight switch. It can be a commitment of several weeks or even months. Your HF Mentor will be more then happy to assist you in switchng your ferret(s) to a natural diet, but you need to be equally as commited. If you aren't willing to tough out a potentially lengthy switching process, or if you have major life changes approaching (baby on the way, moving, starting school, getting married/divorced, etc) then it might be a better idea to wait on switching your ferret's diet until you have more time. Are you willing to make the commitment?
I am willing to make the commitment. I know it possibly can be a lengthy process (which I actually foresee not being the case with my girl, she has already been introduced to a few raw foods and has eaten them with a little bit of hesitancy. My girl is (supposedly, I am unsure of her exact age) around a year old. But yes, I am willing to help my ferret in any way I can to ensure she is successfully switched to a raw diet.
5. How many ferrets do you currently have? What are their names? Ages? Genders? Do they have any health problems? Are they overweight? Underweight? How long have you had each ferret for?
Just one ferret. I've only had her for around a week and a half now, but it has always been one of my goals to own a ferret or two. Animals are my great passion and I've done so much research on ferrets, and have even been a member of Holistic Ferrets and the AFA for several months now. Her name is Dez, she is supposedly around a year old (that is just based on her teeth, I am unsure of her actual age with her being a rescue), unsure about any health problems. I plan on having her seen by a reputable vet as soon as I can, I am actually on the hunt in finding a decent vet to have her checked out. She is definitely underweight, with her being on a terrible diet it was to be expected. I am slowly but surely putting some meat on her bones.
6. What diet do you currently feed your ferrets? (Please include all treats, supplements, etc) Do they already eat some form of soup?
She currently eats All Living Things Ferret Daily Diet (I know, yucky) but I have also been offering her chicken thigh and chicken and turkey baby food, mainly to help her gain some weight and to introduce her to some form of raw diet. I have a package being shipped to me with tons of samples of some better kibbles that I will try out and see if she likes (Orijen 90 and a few others).
7. Have you ever tried to switch your ferrets to a natural diet in the past? If yes, what happened?
This is the first time she has ever been introduced to a natural diet of any degree.
8. What additional information about yourself or your ferrets would you like to share?
Like I said, my ferret was a rescue. She came from a home where she was in pretty terrible living conditions. I am very blessed to have her join my family. I am a teenager who's still in high school, but animals are my great passion, exotic animals in particular. Hedgehogs are one of the wonderful pets I have, and I have plans to breed hedgehogs in the future.
9. How often during the week do you have access to a computer?
Anytime during the week, I am always reachable. Smartphone and computer at home.
10. Please post a picture of each of your ferrets (if possible).
11. Have you met the requirements for this program? Do you have your scale, a place to access meats, hearts, livers, etc?
I have a kitchen scale that weighs grams that I use to weigh hedgehogs, as well as use to weigh food for the ferret, but it is small, i'm unsure if it is able to weigh a ferret but I'm sure it could! I also have a scale that weighs in pounds for humans, if that can be used. My main source of raw meats and organs I've decided will be a website called Hare Today, that i'm sure most of you have heard of. However, their stock is on a first come first serve basis, and I have a butcher shop in my town that i'm sure I could get meats and organs from.
