I got my hands on a dehydrator.... now what!? lol The directions with it are really no help as for meats it only talks about marinating it first, and cooking chicken/turkey first. I also remember someone on here mentioned using a meat tenderizer on the meat before dehydrating? Any suggestions? What works best for you? THX

Good question 3kaw, I was going to ask about meat jerky, we have a jerky stand here and I was curious if jerky was good for them and what kind? Uncooked? I was going to pick up some jerky for myself and ask if they could do some for the ferrets.

Really...really easy guys. Spray your pans load them up with liver, gibbies or hearts (these take longer, the thicker the meat the longer to dry) or any meat that you're going to dehydrate. Then comes the really hard part....walk away and let it do it's thing ;D ;D Now, it then depends on how brittle you want it so check it in 12 or 24 hrs and see if it's what you want. I find that the lower level is usually done about 12 hrs before the top level so I just take it out. I ran 5 levels on the weekend. Some is real crispy...got busy and forgot about it..but the dog doesn't care (my ferrets don't like the stuff for the most part but the dog loves it)

So no tenderizer needed? I'm thinking more for the ferts, as the dogs eat ANYTHING lol How thin to you cut it Heather?

Oh and how do you store it? For how long?
Fearless....I would think the jerky stand would have additives on the meat you would not want the ferts eating? I'd ask.

No tenderizing needed, not chemicals...just meat. How thick to cut it. I just did some veal, it didn't need to be cut at all. Even the beef liver doesn't. What I do, is when it's done I cut it with scissors to the desired sizes. How long it lasts, depends on how dry you dry it. I've found stuff in a container in the back of the cupboard that was made before Christmas (oops) and it's fine. If you're uncomfortable put the container in the freezer or fridge and date it (it can't be any worse than ferret jerky and it dosn't smell as bad : ciao

Awesome! I was just asking about this on a different thread because I wanted to dry liver or giblets to use as training aids. I'm excited to give it a shot.

I read somewhere that it can be kinda stinky if you can put the dehydrator outside that might help

Oh I meant to add, they will do it any way you want and you can bring your own meat for the Jerky Hut or whatever they call it. Which is why I thought it was a neat idea for the ferrets.
