There should be a petition or something to keep the 140' As much as I agree with this, they've already changed the production to the new one. Odds of them spending yet MORE cash to change production back to the old one are pretty remote

Which sucks. I hope I get the old model with new shelves, that would be uber awesome.

If u look at the links I posted on your thread you can see the shelves in the cages. There were a couple ferrets that died from shock after getting a toe stuck in the old shelves so they changed them. I have them still but cover them. My senior Loki got stuck and pooped and peed on herself. Luckily I was home and heard her screaming. It was so sad she was dangling upside down by 1 toe Sent from my SCH-M828C using ProBoards

I like the 142. I have TTFRs old one and it is wonderful. I haven't encountered the 182 in person, except in the box but I just don't like the tab idea. Also, and maybe my guys are the only ones, but they just pull themselves into the FN w/o a ramp. I like that they do it too because I feel like it gives them an itty bitty work-out, lol. On the very bottom shelf I hung a hammock, I was going to put a litter box or a dig box but I feel like they'll just push it off. They like to push things down, haha. Also, and I could be wrong because I haven't had to repair anything but I dint think you'd be doing yourself any favors getting a fixerup because you may not be able to get the parts, and w/ the 142 being the old model Midwest has a great opportunity to jack up the prices on parts. I'm not saying that they will, but you never know. I'm a better safe than sorry kinda girl.

I had no trouble putting my 182 together. I did use a rubber mallet a few times, but that was all. It feels solid to me, but I have no reason to be pushing up on the cage. I've seen the old shelves and really like the new ones. Much safer and better to control spills when they decide the water bowl is a swimming pool.

Or would I have to replace them?

They come with the old ones I think but I have no clue. Either way you can buy or make shelf covers and its safe. I kind of like the new shelves but I think my boys would knock the pans around.

I've got the older shelves. I just use either covers(or in the case of Willow- she keeps pulling them off ) duct tape all along the front edge.

Depending on when the 142 was made, it could have the new shelves. The shelf design switched over before 140s turned to 180s. So, depends on how long the box was sitting in storage. You can purchase the new shelf versions separately if you decide they're something you want to use.
As for making a "double wide," it's not difficult, but it's a two-person job. Somebody holds the panels in place, and the other zip-ties. I have the equivalent of two 142s side-by-side right now and love it.

I'm thinking of doing this with Minion and Atreyu's cage. Right now they're not accepting each other but I would like to turn the two cages into one cage giving each ferret more horizontal space than vertical space. Do you have pics of your cages and how they're assembled ciao

yes please, keri, please post a picture. I want to know how to do this in case my two sadly don't get along..
*return to topic* So, basically the new shelves were switched over before the 182 was on the scene. Okay. To get this right, the original 142 shelves were wire, with *holes* right? And the newer shelves, the ones on 182, are just flat plastic pan?
