From what I've heard the cat version is a smaller version of the ferret, it's cheaper but the same. I didn't even know they made a rabbit kind, I personally use the ferret kind, but only cause it's all I can find.

They are made of the same material(at least ferret can cat- I didn't know they made a rabbit one either ;D ), so go with the cheapest, which would be the cat.

No difference other than the size of the pellet.
I tried Yesterday's News once, but didn't care for it. It doesn't have much absorbency, I would clean the litter boxes and have a pool of urine sitting under the litter.

And I was throwing out way too much good litter, just trying to make sure it was clean.

The Cat and Ferret are made of same stuff, the only difference is the cat is a bit smaller pieces. The cat is also ALOT cheaper, plus you can buy the mega bags.
I use the cat yesterdays news, I have great luck with it, very minimal tracking and everything. And our petsmarts make a brand of litter thats equivalent to yesterdays news, and is a bit cheaper.
You can use wood stove pellets too, thats the cheapest route, get like 40/50lb bag for $5-$8. Most shelters use this as it works great and is cheapest. I tried it and didn't like ti bc it tracks in the cage too much. I wouldn't have a problem but my fat boys drag their big belly's around and make litter mess!!

Huh I've never had absorbency issues with the Yesterdays News... I do throw a lot out due to it not being scoop friendly.
It's either it's not scoop friendly and you throw so much away or....
You get the clumpable safe cat litters and it tracks, and waste that way.
I'll be trying Swheat Scoop next, more just to try it and see how long it takes me to go through it. This will be my final decision, which lasts longer for me and is the easiest to clean up. I like my pelleted litter and really don't have any complaints other than I throw a lot away.

I use a cheaper version called Mewsprint...it's a bigger pellet than Yesterday's News and absorbs better. I like it better than the pine pellets (these work very well) which seemed to absorb the water waste very well but then would disintegrate and then the brats would trek it throughout the house. I didn't realize that there were different types of Yesterday's News. ciao

Hmm, I found a pet store that carries Mewsprint. I'm going to pick up a bag this week to try it out.

How good are the wood stove pellets? Any issues with parasites in the bag?

How good are the wood stove pellets? Any issues with parasites in the bag? Lots of shelters and breeders use the wood stove pellets. Of all the years I have seen it, I've never seen nor heard any issue of parasites. You can get the pellets at a hardware store, when in season walmart carries it, our shelter gets it from tractor supply they carry it all year long. Neither pellets nor yesterdays news is actually scoopable, basically its a dump and replace kind of litter. Which that works for me, I don't like to scoop I rather dump and give all fesh, my ferrets like it best that way and it cuts back on odor. I have even seen ppl do 1/2 yesterdays news and 1/2 pellets.

i use hardwood pellets (for burning in stoves) and they absorb urine well and don't track when they've turned to dust (as the pine-based pellets do).
i get mine at a store that sells stoves & fireplaces and accessories.
i pull out the poo and then sift out the still-usable pellets - dump the dust and put the still-good pellets back and top off and they're good to go with a clean box.

I do the same as joclyn.
During the winter and early fall, we're able to get the wood stove pellets at Tractor Supply. Right now we're buying them from Menards as they're one of the few stores left with wood stove pellets in our area.
You can also try any local feed and grain store, they sell pellets. And if not wood stove pellets, you can get the horse bedding - it does the same thing, but may track more.
The tracking in the cage, for me at least, depends on the cage and how many boys are in the cage, as they tend to track more than the females.
If tracking is an issue, put a small blanket (baby receiving blanket size is good) in front of their litter box and change it daily.

I haven't been able to get wood stove pellets for a couple years, so am now using Purina's Second Chance dog litter. The pellets are a bit larger than wood stove pellets, but don't turn into sawdust when they're wet and aren't tracked out of the litter box, plus control urine odor very well. A bag costs me $16 and lasts for over a month. I did try a bag of YN, as I wasn't aware that they'd changed the size of the pellets...I don't like the small pellets as the clean ones can't be sifted out.
