1. Where did you first learn about natural diets for ferrets?
In the research I did before getting my first ferret last year, I vaguely remember reading that ferrets can eat raw meat. After I joined the Holistic Ferret group on Facebook, I learned what feeding raw is all about
2. Please describe the type of diet you would like assistance in switching your ferret(s) to. Be sure to include if you are interested in feeding whole prey (live or frozen-thawed) and if you are wanting to FULLY switch to a natural diet or PARTIALLY. If you are unsure what kind of diet you want to put your ferrets on, please express that and we can help you find the best type of natural diet for your ferret.
I would like to fully switch to raw fed, not whole prey.
3. Why are you interested in switching your ferrets to a natural diet?
My first ferret, Louie, died from bladder stones, and I think it was caused by a poor diet. I want to keep my other two as healthy and happy as possible.
4. Do you understand that switching your ferret to a natural diet can be a lengthy, arduous process? Its not an overnight switch. It can be a commitment of several weeks or even months. Your HF Mentor will be more then happy to assist you in switchng your ferret(s) to a natural diet, but you need to be equally as commited. If you aren't willing to tough out a potentially lengthy switching process, or if you have major life changes approaching (baby on the way, moving, starting school, getting married/divorced, etc) then it might be a better idea to wait on switching your ferret's diet until you have more time. Are you willing to make the commitment?
Yes! And I have my husband to help me
5. How many ferrets do you currently have? What are their names? Ages? Genders? Do they have any health problems? Are they overweight? Underweight? How long have you had each ferret for?
I have two ferrets. Macie is an 11 month old girl, and Harley is a 4 month old boy.
Macie gets frequent bladder infections and is currently on an antibiotic for pneumonia. She's very petite, and I worry about her being underweight. She's 1.1lbs Harley seems healthy, but he's a heavy breather and coughs sometimes. He's a lot bigger than Macie but he's still growing into himself, so he has baby fat! He's 2.8lbs
6. What diet do you currently feed your ferrets? (Please include all treats, supplements, etc) Do they already eat some form of soup?
They are currently eating Orijen Regional Red cat food. It's literally the best I could find, besides Wysong. They get to eat laxatone when I do their nails, and I'm hoping to find a gooey treat without all the vegetable oils in it to replace the lax. I do feed them Marshall's Duk soup, which they eat willingly most of the time and sometimes need some encouragement.
They eat eggs if they're mixed in with soup. I've also infrequently fed them coconut oil and tried olive oil but they didn't like it.
7. Have you ever tried to switch your ferrets to a natural diet in the past? If yes, what happened?
No, I haven't.
8. What additional information about yourself or your ferrets would you like to share?
One of the reasons I feed them Orijen is because back when Macie was eating food that had chicken in it, she occasionally pooped lime green poops. It was suggested to me by an experienced ferret owner to stop feeding chicken because that may be what she's reacting to. Ever since the switch to Orijen, she has not pooped green for a long time and I'm nervous to buy a bunch of chicken meats only to find out that she can't tolerate it. What is my best plan of action? Should I make soup with chicken some days and another poultry other days?
9. How often during the week do you have access to a computer?
I have a smartphone, but limited data. When my data runs out at the end of the month (I've been using it like crazy this week reading everything on the HFF!), I'll have to find a WiFi hotspot in town, which won't be hard, just not convenient.
10. Please post a picture of each of your ferrets (if possible).
