1. Where did you first learn about natural diets for ferrets?
Online somewhere I'm sure
2. Please describe the type of diet you would like assistance in switching your ferret(s) to. Be sure to include if you are interested in feeding whole prey (live or frozen-thawed) and if you are wanting to FULLY switch to a natural diet or PARTIALLY. If you are unsure what kind of diet you want to put your ferrets on, please express that and we can help you find the best type of natural diet for your ferret.
I think I would to do a frankenprey diet with frozen-thawed whole prey as treats. I do not think, at least not anytime soon, I could handle live prey
3. Why are you interested in switching your ferrets to a natural diet?
I have been wanting to get the babies on a raw diet for some time now, but I was being lazy about it. Now that my Zoey has been diagnosed with A.D., it's a real wake up call that I need to do something now
4. Do you understand that switching your ferret to a natural diet can be a lengthy, arduous process? Its not an overnight switch. It can be a commitment of several weeks or even months. Your HF Mentor will be more then happy to assist you in switchng your ferret(s) to a natural diet, but you need to be equally as commited. If you aren't willing to tough out a potentially lengthy switching process, or if you have major life changes approaching (baby on the way, moving, starting school, getting married/divorced, etc) then it might be a better idea to wait on switching your ferret's diet until you have more time. Are you willing to make the commitment?
I am more than ready to start this!
5. How many ferrets do you currently have? What are their names? Ages? Genders? Do they have any health problems? Are they overweight? Underweight? How long have you had each ferret for?
I am currently owned by 5 babies
-Zoey, DOB: 07/17/11 Female. Diagnosed with Adrenal Disease 05/17/14 and monitoring her blood glucose because I am worried about insulinoma (she received the DES implant, bg=92. on monday her bg=106! Going back in 3 months to test again) Zoey is petite weighing 1lb 9oz-I'd like her to put on weight, but she's been tiny since the day we got her 11/11/11
-Zekrom, DOB: 10/15/11 Male. Currently healthy, although he has rat tail and I'm constantly worried he has A.D. too (I've taken him to 3 different vets who all say he's fine) His vet says his weight is good, but I would like him to put on some weight used to be close to 4lbs last year, now (and I'm shaking my head because I can't believe I forget) he weighs around 2 pounds! I miss my chunky monkey but he's happy and always running! We got Zekrom, from Craigslist, 03/07/12.
-Pepper, DOB: 10/07/12 Female. Healthy and becoming a cuddle baby lately! I think her weight is good at 2lbs 2oz(give or take an ounce) and Pepper came into our lives 04/01/13.
-Elvyra, DOB: 06/30/13 Female. Healthy, beautiful, and bossy She is also a good weight at 2lbs 4oz. She is the only one who is constantly nibbling and biting-doesn't break the skin and I don't think she does it to be mean. We got Elvyra 10/28/13.
-Reshiram, DOB: 06/30/13 Male. Healthy and happy! I think he could be overweight, or just big boned He weighs in at 3lbs 4oz and is just a happy boy who looovvvveeeeesssss everyone! Reshiram is Elvyra's litter/cage mate so we also brought him home 10/28/13.
6. What diet do you currently feed your ferrets? (Please include all treats, supplements, etc) Do they already eat some form of soup?
Kibble=Orijen cat/kitten, Wysong Epigen 90 (original/old formula), and Nature's Variety Instinct grain free chicken meal.
Bandit treats (I know, I know)
Everyone looovvvvveeeessss olive oil (nail trims)
Everyone, except Zoey, enjoys the weekly egg yolk.
Zoey gets some plain vaseline since she won't eat the egg yolks anymore.
7. Have you ever tried to switch your ferrets to a natural diet in the past? If yes, what happened?
I tried a frozen-thawed mouse(fuzzy I think it was called) with Zoey,Zekrom, and Pepper=no go
I also tried cooked chicken breast(no seasonings of course) with Zoey and Zekrom=Zoey gave me the death stare and Zekrom gave a few licks and walked away.
8. What additional information about yourself or your ferrets would you like to share?
My husband and I got married on Pepper's birthday (We knew it was a sign we had to rescue her from the pet store) and we're in an apartment. We hope to get a house soon, but until then we have limited freezer space My husband, Tom, thinks I'm obsessed with ferrets...and I think he's right But we both just adore the babies we have!
9. How often during the week do you have access to a computer?
Everyday by phone
10. Please post a picture of each of your ferrets (if possible).
I have lots on facebook but I'll try to upload some on here soon!
11. Have you met the requirements for this program? Do you have your scale, a place to access meats, hearts, livers, etc?
I got the scale and currently have crushed egg shells in a ziplock bag, chicken thighs, hearts, gizzards and livers in the freezer! I know there's a butcher about 10 minutes away from me, but I have not gone there yet. I was able to locate the meats at 3 different grocery stores.
