So, everytime I go to the hardware store, I look for things I could adapt to ferret toys. I've bought white plastic flexible ducting (got 50' for $10 on clearance) and some black drainage pipe (it's really sturdy, but not very flexible and harder to store). I've kept my eyes peeled for something like the marshall tunnels, only cheaper...and clear. I finally figured out what it is!!! It is a hose for sawdust collection in workshops! I've found a place that sells it online...around $50 for 50 ft. (plus shipping) www.buildingsupplyplus.com/4176_page_1615123.htm I know I'm probably not the only one who has been curious about that stuff and unwilling to pay Marshalls prices for it, so I thought I'd share.

I got a the cardboard tubing that carpets ate shipped on for free from a local outlet store. Its about 6ft long and the perfect dimension for a growing ferret. Loki loves his. I love the idea of using ducting/tubing from hardware stores. That's definitely one of the next steps.

Oh this is really awesome! I am trying to get my hubby to allow me to turn the 'animal room' (currently has ferrets and my tort table in it, but we are building an enclosure for tort to go outside now that he is big enough) and I want to fill it with fun things like this. Will be bookmarking this link.... THANKS for the share! And I LOVE your pic! Ditto on @poncesmom sentiments (dance)

The Marshall thru-way tunneling is about $1.25 per foot and free shipping on Amazon, so it comes within 1 cent per foot of the same cost as the 50 foot duct after you factor in S&H. I bought an 8 foot length clear plastic, flexible duct on Amazon when it was on sale for under $8 since it was a bit cheaper. Comparing it to the Marshall one, the material is generally identical. The only difference I could see was that the Marshall tunnel already comes with each end cable-tied to prevent the ferrets from gouging themselves on the wiring at the end.

I bought some black drainage pipe like that when doing their remote litter pan. It was a 10 Ft piece, much more than I needed, but I left pieces lay around after the project and they love crawling through them. All that fun for a fraction of the cost.

The issue with the Marshall's one compared to the sawdust collection tubing is definitely durability. Marshall's wants you to have to replace it regularly. The sawdust collection systems NEED to be durable

I couldn't tell that either (Builder's Best or the Marshall's) was notably thicker or tougher than the other, they even appear so similar that they could feasibly be from the same manufacturer. The first Marshall tunnel I bought has been in use for years and hasn't worn out, even though it's been a permanent fixture in my ferrets' living area for a month or so.

You ARE lucky. They last all of a month or three here before holes start appearing.

I've found the Marshals tunnels that I've purchased in the past are not long wearing. The fact that they cost a prohibitive amount of money up here has prevented me from buying them in a long time. They're also too small for my hobs to play in, especially during the winter. ciao
