So my two ferrets have been eating raw for a couple of months now and what I am feeding is a product called Urban Carnivore, which is whole ground carcasses. It doesn't include fur or feathers, and I do believe the heads and feet, etc are taken off the carcasses, but it is basically muscle, organ and bone all ground up into patties. They are doing great with the chicken and rabbit varieties, but beef was not accepted at all. I tried for about a week, on two separate occasions, leaving them with no choice but beef, making beef soupies with kibble, beef soupies with chicken, hand feeding, etc. My female would eat a little bit but the male won't touch it. I figure beef is not the most natural of meats for them, so is this ok? I've got some other options, they make duck, turkey, etc. Just want to get them eating some other meats as the rabbit is very expensive.
Also they are about 8 months old now and my male is chewing everything in sight. Twice now he's gone off his food because of having eaten too much fabric from a stuffed toy or blankie. First time was bad, he looked sick and wouldn't touch anything. I got him to eat a ton of vaseline and it passed and he was fine. Second time he was just not eating as much for a couple days but still alert, so again I gave him vaseline and pumpkin and found a ton of stuffing in the litter box. So all the stuffed toys are now put away, they only play with them while I am watching.
Since he's so into chewing I brought home some veal bully sticks (they are for dogs, they are a dried part of a bull penis type thing and supposedly pure muscle and fully digestable). They are a huge hit but my boy is OBSESSED with them, he chews them constantly. I have been taking them away periodically but should i be worried about it? I'm hoping the whole crazy chewing phase will slow down a bit, and it keeps him from eating his blankets. I do take them away when they get too small and are at risk of being swallowed. I know the dogs do okay with swallowing a chunk but not sure how the ferrets would fare being their digestive tract is so short.
