1. Where did you first learn about natural diets for ferrets?
The first time I took my ferret Maverick to the vet years ago the subject was brought up. However it was also brought up as a risky thing and I was unsure about the whole thing. I’ve been witness to a friend’s raw feeding of her dogs and cat and it’s helped me to see how raw feeding can be done.
2. Please describe the type of diet you would like assistance in switching your ferret(s) to. Be sure to include if you are interested in feeding whole prey (live or frozen-thawed) and if you are wanting to FULLY switch to a natural diet or PARTIALLY. If you are unsure what kind of diet you want to put your ferrets on, please express that and we can help you find the best type of natural diet for your ferret.
I would like assistance in switching my 3 ferrets to a whole pray or at least frankin-pray diet. I want them to be fully on a natural raw diet.
3. Why are you interested in switching your ferrets to a natural diet?
I would like to see my ferrets happier and healthier for longer and would like to be able to give them the best I can.
4. Do you understand that switching your ferret to a natural diet can be a lengthy, arduous process? Its not an overnight switch. It can be a commitment of several weeks or even months. Your HF Mentor will be more than happy to assist you in switching your ferret(s) to a natural diet, but you need to be equally as committed. If you aren't willing to tough out a potentially lengthy switching process, or if you have major life changes approaching (baby on the way, moving, starting school, getting married/divorced, etc) then it might be a better idea to wait on switching your ferret's diet until you have more time. Are you willing to make the commitment?
I’m willing to make the commitment and don’t have any upcoming chances that I know of.
5. How many ferrets do you currently have? What are their names? Ages? Genders? Do they have any health problems? Are they overweight? Underweight? How long have you had each ferret for?
Maverick - 5 years at the beginning of July, 2014. Male. Beginnings of Cardiomyopathy. Healthy weight. Has been with me for 4 years.
Lady Rayne - 1 year at end of June, 2014. Female. No health problems. Healthy weight. Has been with me for almost 5 months.
Severus - 8 months, middle of June, 2014. Male. No health problems. Healthy weight. Has been with me for 4 months.
6. What diet do you currently feed your ferrets? (Please include all treats, supplements, etc) Do they already eat some form of soup?
They are currently eating only raw chicken soup. A variation of the starter recipe provided here. ~24oz chicken with bone (whole chicken ground at home), 3-4oz chicken liver, 3-4oz chicken heart, 1 teaspoon bone powder, 2 tablespoon F-botic Wysong, and ~1 cup of water for consistency. They prefer thinner soups to a thicker mush, but will eat mushy chicken if hand fed.
7. Have you ever tried to switch your ferrets to a natural diet in the past? If yes, what happened?
I’ve attempted to switch Maverick and Willy Bean over at the end of 2013. I thought things were going well. Maverick and Willy Bean were eating small pieces of chicken muscle meat and eating a soup with chicken and Marshal’s Duk Soup mix. During December/January Willy Bean too a turn for the worse and passed away due to lymphoma in February. Maverick was much more comfortable eating kibble and I didn’t want to stress him out more than I had to so we stopped.
8. What additional information about yourself or your ferrets would you like to share?
I’m a poor vet clinic assistant with too much time on my hands and fortunate to live in an area with good food banks and public transit. I want to give my ferrets the best I can, in the ways that I can.
My ferrets have so far been taking the raw diet well, but I have a lot of questions and feel that I can do better if I have someone to help me answer some or all of those questions.
The first time I tried transitioning my boys to raw I was a little pushy with them and have since learned to be more patient with them. However I’d like help to know when I need to add or take away something in their diet.
Maverick, my old guy, has taken to it surprisingly well. He’s often more into it now than the other two. Rayne is the pickiest of the three and Severus isn’t quite as picky and will eat on his own sometimes. All of them will eat raw chicken soup on their own once I get them started. However I do spoon feed Maverick more than the other two still, because I’m afraid he doesn’t eat enough.
I’m also really curious as to why so much goes in, but so little comes out. And often it’s not what I expect it too look like when it does come out.
9. How often during the week do you have access to a computer?
Pretty much 24/7. I have my own computer at home and a phone with internet and full internet capability. I do not have computer access at work.
10. Please post a picture of each of your ferrets (if possible).
Three of them together.

Maverick and his favorite unicorn plushie.
11. Have you met the requirements for this program? Do you have your scale, a place to access meats, hearts, livers, etc?
I have a scale, measures in oz, grams and pounds & ounces. There are many Asian grocery stores around my area that a provide variety of meats.
