1. Where did you first learn about natural diets for ferrets?
Ares got sick a week ago and while looking for nursing tips I stumbled on this forum.
2. Please describe the type of diet you would like assistance in switching your ferret(s) to. Be sure to include if you are interested in feeding whole prey (live or frozen-thawed) and if you are wanting to FULLY switch to a natural diet or PARTIALLY. If you are unsure what kind of diet you want to put your ferrets on, please express that and we can help you find the best type of natural diet for your ferret.
I want to fully switch with my ferrets eventually eating whole prey.
3. Why are you interested in switching your ferrets to a natural diet?
I like the benefits it has (better skin, nicer fur, less smelly, poop less), but mainly I just hate the smell of kibble. I would rather chop up carcasses.
4. Do you understand that switching your ferret to a natural diet can be a lengthy, arduous process? Its not an overnight switch. It can be a commitment of several weeks or even months. Your HF Mentor will be more then happy to assist you in switchng your ferret(s) to a natural diet, but you need to be equally as commited. If you aren't willing to tough out a potentially lengthy switching process, or if you have major life changes approaching (baby on the way, moving, starting school, getting married/divorced, etc) then it might be a better idea to wait on switching your ferret's diet until you have more time. Are you willing to make the commitment?
I understand and am willing to make this commitment. I have summer vacation in a week and will have plenty of time to monitor them and make sure they're transitioning well.
5. How many ferrets do you currently have? What are their names? Ages? Genders? Do they have any health problems? Are they overweight? Underweight? How long have you had each ferret for?
I have a male, Ares, he's 2 years old. I've had him since he was a kit, so over a year and a half. No health problems, not overweight or underweight. He's 1.1 kilograms (two and a half pounds).
I have a female, Inara, she's 2 months old. I've had her for only 2 days at this point. No health problems that I'm aware of and her bone structure was checked by officials from Germany, her weight is perfect for her age at this point, 500 grams (one and a half pounds).
6. What diet do you currently feed your ferrets? (Please include all treats, supplements, etc) Do they already eat some form of soup?
- Totally Ferret, it's a kibble but I'm starting to take it out of their diet because Inara doesn't eat it and Ares eats most forms of meat fine.
- The chicken meat soup that's on the Facebook page, Ares and Inara both eat it eagerly.
- I've given them quail today (breasts, legs, partial wings). Ares had some difficulty chewing through the bones so I gave him mostly quail breast, which he ate huge chunks of. Inara is better at chewing through the bone and can eat up to half a leg at a time.
- Ferre-T-Sup(er)vite. Similar to ferretvite. A vitamin supplement with L-carnitine and taurine. As I've said before, Ares got sick and I give it to him daily to build up his strength.
- Pinkies as a snack.
7. Have you ever tried to switch your ferrets to a natural diet in the past? If yes, what happened?
No.
8. What additional information about yourself or your ferrets would you like to share?
Not that I can think of, no.
9. How often during the week do you have access to a computer?
Every day, except for one or both days of the weekend for a few hours. I work in the weekend part time.
10. Please post a picture of each of your ferrets (if possible).
Ares (silver one) and Inara (sable) in their play pen.
11. Have you met the requirements for this program? Do you have your scale, a place to access meats, hearts, livers, etc?
Yes, my kitchen scale measures to 1 g and there's a store 10 minutes from my house that sells exclusively whole prey and prey animals in parts (organs and such). Saves me money and time.
