1. Where did you first learn about natural diets for ferrets? through your FB page
2. Please describe the type of diet you would like assistance in switching your ferret(s) to. Be sure to include if you are interested in feeding whole prey (live or frozen-thawed) and if you are wanting to FULLY switch to a natural diet or PARTIALLY. If you are unsure what kind of diet you want to put your ferrets on, please express that and we can help you find the best type of natural diet for your ferret.
i want to fully switch to a natural diet, preferably whole prey [frozen-thawed]
3. Why are you interested in switching your ferrets to a natural diet? being a vet for 5 years+ and seeing what kibble does to animals over the course of their life.. i saw animals come in that were raw fed- they were always healthier by a long shot. now that i have animals of my own, i want them to be as healthy as possible.
4. Do you understand that switching your ferret to a natural diet can be a lengthy, arduous process? Its not an overnight switch. It can be a commitment of several weeks or even months. Your HF Mentor will be more then happy to assist you in switching your ferret(s) to a natural diet, but you need to be equally as committed. If you aren't willing to tough out a potentially lengthy switching process, or if you have major life changes approaching (baby on the way, moving, starting school, getting married/divorced, etc) then it might be a better idea to wait on switching your ferret's diet until you have more time. Are you willing to make the commitment?
yes
5. How many ferrets do you currently have? What are their names? Ages? Genders? Do they have any health problems? Are they overweight? Underweight? How long have you had each ferret for?
I have 3 spayed females. 2 are sisters from the same litter, "Khal and Khaleesi" they are 1 year and 4 months old. I have had them for about a year. Khal is of normal weight, Khaleesi looks to be a runt with petite frame, so very small, but of normal weight for her size. The last girl I have, Tyrion, since March.. she is 4 months old- quite a healthy weight. None have health problems at the moment.
6. What diet do you currently feed your ferrets? (Please include all treats, supplements, etc) Do they already eat some form of soup? They currently eat kibble, along with 1 egg 1-2 times a week. Khal though really hates the egg and barely any of it goes down. Khaleesi and Tyrion are quite happy to eat as much as they can get. I do not feed treats/supplements.
7. Have you ever tried to switch your ferrets to a natural diet in the past? If yes, what happened?
this has been a long process and I'm doing it wrong by myself, which is why I'm applying here. for a year I have been trying and failing at feeding my original girls a raw diet. I started off with the duck soup. Khal really doesn't like eggs, or the smell or the taste or being near them, I even tried adding ferretone to it to trick him into liking them- he just runs away. I tried putting pieces in his mouth, running it along his gumline (before I even knew I was supposed to try that!) I just sat for hours on the kitchen floor with every kind of meat I could buy from the store. Mince.. chicken.. I tried boiling meat, using the broth- for soup, I tried raw egg, scrambled egg, half cooked meat, bone in meat.. cut up meat.. they acting as if it was invisible to them. So then I tried adding in their own kibble to it. Not a success. I tried buying chicken gizzards and hearts.. no interest from any of them. I tried chicken wings. No interest again. So I did try to coat the chicken wings in egg yolk- Khaleesi picked up the chicken wing and moved it into a corner (stashed it) but never went back. All this time I've tried various forms of cutting up with meat/mashing it and putting bits in their mouths. They came from broken homes, but they've been with me for long enough to realise kibble isn't not an excuse anymore!! It's time they switched over I have the time and the commitment for it. I am moving in a week down to the beach, but I heard there is a couple month waiting time- so by the time a mentor is free.. we'll be settled into our new home down south. I've read all your material and have all the items I need already.
8. What additional information about yourself or your ferrets would you like to share?
they are all free roam day and night. they have their own home if they chose to stay in it, but they rarely do. once in a while I'll find all three of them in the hammock but for the most part they sleep with me. I'm bonded to them quite closely and know them inside and out. I'm home 24-7, so I'm not afraid of what they might get into or up to.. I'm here watching them all day
9. How often during the week do you have access to a computer?
24/7
10. Please post a picture of each of your ferrets (if possible).
11. Have you met the requirements for this program? Do you have your scale, a place to access meats, hearts, livers, etc?
Yes
