Can you over feed salmon oil? I just found the pure grizzly salmon oil in my local pet specialty shop and was going to use it as a distraction when I do their nail trims.Thank you in advance.

How much should they average per day? I use it to pass Remus' meds and I worry sometimes that I'm overfeeding it...

Actually I've been wondering about this myself

I only give 1/2 tsp every third day. However if the meds are short term it shouldn't cause more than funky poops from overdoing it.

The different sized bottles give a different amount per pump. I emailed Grizzly about it yesterday, regarding the 8oz. sized bottle, and they recommended a 1/2 pump dose per day for any animal lighter than 10 pounds. I haven't gotten around to measuring how much this is in tsp or ml, but I asked them for that information as well, just haven't heard back yet.

Grizzly replied that one pump of their 8oz bottle dispenses 2ml of oil, meaning their recommended dosage is 1ml (just under 1/4 tsp) per ferret per day, which is still higher than Sherry's recommendation. If I dilute the salmon oil by half with EVOO like some of the members here do, is the recommendation still about 1/2 tsp every few days?

That 1/2 tsp is total oil consumption.

Thank you. Do both oils have enough exclusive benefits that I should give both instead of just one? Is the effectiveness of either diminished by mixing the two and offering them simultaneously (ie. for ferrets that hate olive oil but like fish oil)?

So does this mean that I shouldn't use it too much as a training treat? Although I only give her a drop at a time to lick off my finger. She doesn't like any other treats right now (I've tried liver treats, chicken jerky, etc.). On the plus side I'm now up to 2/3 salmon oil + 1/3 'tone, so that's progress from her initial disdain of salmon oil (thanks for that tip, Sherry!).
And I have the same question as raynebc: EVOO versus salmon oil: both equally? favor one over the other? Should they both be limited equally or is one "worse" than the other?

Even though they don't really digest the plant matter, EVOO is suspected to fight/deter the bacteria that causes ulcers, and is supposed to be a good hairball prevention supplement.
Salmon oil from what I can tell is mostly a nutritional supplement and while it has benefits such as improved skin and fur condition, I don't know if it is as effective for other purposes such as preventing hairballs.

What's the easiest way to convince a ferret to take salmon oil over Ferretone? None of my guys are interested in any other kind of oil and "carpet slide" if I put it on them to groom off

Sherry gave me this tip, and so far it's working: gradually mix in the salmon oil with the Ferretone. I started out with a mixture of 1/2 salmon oil and 1/2 Ferretone, and Maisie liked it. If she hadn't taken to it, I'd've tried lower, like 1/4th oil 3/4ths Tone. Right now we're at 2/3rds oil, 1/3rd Tone. Hopefully one day 100% oil!

I don't know why I didn't think of mixing it! I'll have to try that out now. Thanks!
