Hello I am going to be getting a ferret in the next few weeks and am trying to decide on a cage. I had ferrets around 6 or 7 years ago with my ex, but he kept them when we split and I can't remember much about what cage we ended up choosing. I know that we did try letting them free roam and it worked well when we had one ferret but once we got a second one it was no longer going so well. What cage would you recommend and what size? So far I am leaning toward getting a ferret nation cage. How large of a cage do I need for one ferret? I want to make sure he/she will have plenty of room. I may eventually get two but right now I am just going to get one. Though I have heard of ferret math so I'm sure it won't stay that way LOL. Any other advice for preparing to bring my little fuzzball home would be greatly appreciated!!

Pretty much everyone on here is gonna recommend the FN cages. I have one ferret in a FN182 and I don't think I would want to put him in anything smaller.

You'll end up wanting a ferret nation eventually, so may as well just start with one. Start looking on craigslist, etc, for a used one. You might get lucky. It's cheaper to buy a 182 double unit than to get a single level 181 and the add-on level later.

Thanks! That is what I was leaning towards. Any other must haves for the cage? I know blankets and a hammock but what else will make my little baby happy? Do you recommend getting the double? It said the single was good for just one ferret but that doesn't look like nearly enough room. (disagree)

Look into the market section in the forum. I believe there's some places you can get some really great ferret bedding. Many of these people make bedding to support shelters that they either support or run. It should give you some ideas as to what can go into the cages. I too, FN cages. There are some problems with them but they're by far the best ferret cages ciao

I use full sized ferret nations. I've taken 3 of them (actually 6) and put them into banks of 3, so that they are 3 wide and I don't have levels (no ramps). One full sized (2 level) ferret nation can comfortably house 4 ferrets of average size as long as they get more than 4 hrs of out time. ciao

I started out with a smaller cage when I had just one and as soon as I got my FN two more ferrets were added. They are still under a year, but have plenty of space to hang out and sleep. That's all they really do in it as there out MOST evenings when I am home. It is always recommended to get the biggest cage you can on your own budget. The FN are certainly the easiest to clean and get into to add hammocks or toys. And definitely look on craigslist! I and my sis was able to get a double unit on two separate occasions for right at $100. Both in great shape! The bedding sets along with other neat things can be found here: holisticferret60.proboards.com/board/53/general-store

I'm also going to reiterate the FN cage. I've had two other cages and I can't believe I waited to long to get mine. I've had it for over 3 years and never regretted it.
