Little Leia kitten has left me for the bridge... My 11 year old foster girl, My fragile 'kitten'
Leia came to us through a massive group debate over who should get her. There were emails flying back and forth that a ten year old ferret was being given up and the manager didn't want her in the shelter, she was to be fostered immediately upon pick up, to whoever it was that was officially taking her. And so it was, my mother shot an email to the shelter director that we had an extra cage space for the little girl and we'd lost Hagrid the year before. Our shelter manager found that we were perfect, because we didn't fight for her, we just wanted to give her a loving home.
When she got to us, she had calluses that grew out of her paws like extra nails, five of them on each foot, curled in weird directions... SHe was scruffy and her hair was a little thin but that was to be expected, we expected a lot worse from a Marshall farms girl who managed to live to 11. We'd expected acute insulinoma, or Something to be seriously wrong with her, But all we found was a slightly swollen spleen and very treatable insulinoma, as well as cataracts in both eyes.
The previous owners had told us that she got cod liver oil every day of her life right out of a spoon, but she was eating the crap walmart food. It was astounding.
So she came to us, we switched her slowly over to Blue Wilderness, we got her on commercial raw(and eventually even raw chicken cuts) and just a week ago, she tried her first chunk of pork shoulder, and loved it. Oh she sure did! She grew back what sparse hair was missing before, she became silky soft and even though she was on good food, her hair always stuck out at silly angles.
She played as hard as she could, and when the mass on her spleen was too big for her to walk comfortably(it was by her leg) then she'd lay on her back and let me pet her while i did my usual rounds on the computer, or while i drew pictures with my tablet. Leia loved to play outside in the grass and sniff her surroundings, she loved just being outside, she loved the flowers.
Last night, my little Leia's spleen decided it was done.. The mass on her spleen ruptured, and we rushed her to the vet knowing that she would not be coming back home with her shiny blind eyes and her little pink nose sniffing about like all the times that we brought her back from seizures(not bad ones though) I knew the moment she wasn't responding like normal, that this was the end. Her lips and nose were blue, and her belly was not. I knew right away that it was her spleen, but i always deep down wished that it was a seizure, that they could bring her back from it.. But i knew it wasn't.
The post mortim proved that it was indeed her mass that ruptured, and that her surrounding organs for her age were surprisingly healthy... My little girl, i can only hope was happy, and i can only hope that her last hour wasn't in pain.
I love you Leia

This was the last time she scared me, The first big seize she had, and the last. Luckily.. I was crying because she was eating and awake and seemed normal.
She really was beautiful
She played with Lydia sometimes
her favourite tent
