Thank you for posting this. I haven't completed the third level of our triple wide FN because I felt like I needed the extra FN for boarders & an isolation cage. I can expand and create a cool new cage with all of the pieces I have left.

That looks good. How are you latching the door? And Mogwai is just begging for some belly rubs! I hope you gave him some.

Still working on the door latch. was thinking that the combined weight of the cage, slab, and 5 ferrets would be so much that if I moved the cage forward that they could not push the whole cage back enough to swing the door open. I think this requires some testing. I will come up with a latch as a backup plan. these ingenious buggers will probably figure it out and I should have a backup latch in place
In the first pic Mogwai was asleep. since he sleeps with one eye open, he woke up for the 2nd pic. The 3rd pic was "Leave me alone can't you see I was sleeping"

Excellent. Over-thinking a ferret cage isn't a bad idea. They're really quite ingenious when it comes to getting in or out of places ciao

LOL, yeah, I think that would require extensive testing before I would trust it.
Why do ferrets sleep with their eyes open? It's so disconcerting to look in the cage and see them lying there perfectly still with their eyes open... Mogwai is absolutely adorable.

Lol I would never trust them with just their own weight holding the door shut, honestly. Especially when you have five of them together - it just takes one of them being nosey and the others may catch on. A door latch would be a must-have for me!

Keep in mind there is also a 35 pound slab of stone in the cage as well. That with 16 pounds of ferret and 30 pounds of cage. That is a lot of weight and they would have no leverage because they are in the cage. When the cage is pulled forward the door is against the bottom ledge of the overhead. They would have to move the whole cage backwards off the ledge in order to get the door to open. I don't think they could do it. But yes a latch will be in the future as a extra precaution.

Ahh, didn't realize the slab was 35 lbs. Thought it would be closer to 5, it doesn't look so thick. Is there any chance of it simply sliding backwards if you stop, or is it going to be secured or supported from behind?

That is quite possible for it to slide while driving. I have designs to somehow secure the cage while driving so it does not move. once it is parked though I will of course have to be able to move it to open the cage so here is where that latch debate come in. I do not want to underestimate them I have done that too many times.
The slab is very dense. It just happened to be the exact size to fit between the Ferret nation tray and the edge of the cage.

Update and field test results. I ended up epoxying 2 neodymium magnets to the cage to hold the door closed. the combined forced needed to pull the cage door open is about 30 lbs. I just have to be careful there are no ferret feet near the door when closing it ( not an easy feat ) field test. I actually made something the ferrets are using as designed. WOW. It was 86 degrees when this photo was taken.
