Non descented ferrets will "poof" when excited, scared, etc. From what I've been told, it's a very strong musk smell that dissipates pretty quickly. I heard one person describe it as a "ferret fart" ;D What are they eating? That also makes a difference with the oil production, and hence the odour.

From my understanding, a non-descented ferret will not smell any different than a descented one. The only difference is the ability to poof as Sherry pointed out. New babies from Marshall smell horrible. My Dixie still smells funny.
Descenting is a completely unnecessary procedure and, unless you bought her descented, should never be done.

There is no difference in smell between my scented fuzzes and my descented fuzzes, at least until one of them lets go ;D ;D. I would look to diet as being a possible issue the other might be a health related issue too. ciao

Marshalls ferrets are on that stinky mink diet that is mostly whitefish. That is what their kibble is -it smells awful. It takes a while to get the smell out of them once you bring them home, bathe them and start feeding them right. It took more than a month for Sonny to smell normal. I totally blame the marshalls kibble for the reason they smell so awful.

What form is it in? A kibble, or the jerky type food? It's possible some of the smell is simply the natural borderline dehydration from the type of food. It's going to affect some more than others.

Zupreem is a higher end kibble from my understanding and actually have a decent reputation for more exotic feeds (like lemurs and kangaroos, they were our supplier when I worked at a petting zoo) from personal experience I have never had issues with Zupreem, however I'm not that familiar with their ferret food.

Zupreem makes two versions for ferrets. Their regular and a grain-free version. It's not the worst food but not the highest in protein levels. Mine tended to be stinky for the short time I fed mine this kibble.
