Nate and I are going to re pair Rico's cage! What kind of paint would be safe to use on his cage? Something like baby paint maybe? Thanks everyone!

Whatever it has to be chew proof. We had a discussion about this a year or so ago and found there was nothing that was safe. Things may have changed since then ciao

or baked on enamel. I wonder if Midwest Metals who make ferret nations would share a trade secret. That stuff is pretty solid.

It is powder coating. It is the same as what Midwest uses. Powder coating has zero voc's and no solvents (which is where the toxic chemicals are) Unfortunately it requires special equipment and a oven the size of whatever your powder coating. I think you can use a IR source as well to cure.
as for spray paint if they chew it, it is not safe. I only have one ferret that chews and he only chews the bars. I have never had to paint the bars. Just some of the corners and some brackets I made to join the cages at the top of the cage. I used rustoleom. hammered finish, I used both the rosemary and the grey together to mimic the colors that midwest uses. if you paint make sure it is allowed to fully dry and clean the painted spot after it dries to help get rid of any bad residue.

Rico just chews on the bars when he wants to be let out at night. Maybe we could take it somewhere and just have them powder coat it for us

That was the conclusion of the one thread that was started awhile ago. The actual cost was prohibitive. They did find a company that was willing to do it for them but you could have bought a couple of FNs for the cost ciao

I have a powder coating kit, I have done lots of little things. But I can only do things that will fit in a standard oven. and that rules out any cage panels.

Yep, powder coating is the only safe way to "paint" a cage. But it is expensive. Even baked on enamel isn't safe. There will always be solvents that come out of the surface. In the end it is safer and cheaper just to get a new cage.

I did look into the powder coating and it is wayyyy to expensive. Everyone's right we might as well buy a whole new cage. Since Nate and I have decided on adopting 3 more ferrets Rico's cage is just not gonna cut it. I think Nate & I need to look into buying 2 huge ferret nation cages. Any good cages?
