why not try to attach it to the cage my first course of action would be to attach it and to move the water before changing

Both litter boxes are attached to the cage. By dumping, I mean they dig out all the dirty, poo-filled litter all over the cage and my room. The water could be outside of the cage and they'd still find a way to either make it drip and/or dig in it.
They've been given a dig box which has calmed a little bit of the litter digging but then they broke the dig box and now there's dig box contents all over.
It seems that no matter what I do, they're going to make a massive mess with their litter. I just need something that I'm not going to waste money on.

Do you live in a warm climate, littlewiseowl? I've read that bugs in the chicken feed is more common in warm areas.

I use pine pellets ( horse Bedding) 40 lb for $7 and put their water away from litter.

They spew their litter all over the cage so it doesn't really matter where I put the water.
Jackie, I live in Canada so there's not much warmth here right now.

Hmmm, that probably helps keep the bugs away (though doesn't it still get hot in the summer in Canada?)
Anyway, I'll probably be buying a bag of this stuff this week, so wish me luck!

I love Aspen pellets, low tracking, neutralizes ammonia and contains no aromatic oils. Easy clean up, I use a thin layer in box it puffs to absorb urine. Cheap too, not much is needed.

Do you live in a warm climate, littlewiseowl? I've read that bugs in the chicken feed is more common in warm areas. That was another reason I was scared about the bugs. I live in the southern US states and it gets really hot here. I wouldn't worry about getting bugs in it at home, but rather bugs already being PRESENT in the bag when I buy it. Even hardware stores get those issues selling seed or feed. I read you have to freeze it down for a couple of days to kill whatever is in it. I still think putting dead weevils in their box would be nasty

I tricked mine into getting used to the pellets (a bit of carefresh on top, then less and less) Ha Ha! They hated it at first too

When I clean the litter box - I have to sprinkle some old litter on top ( it disingrates when peed on - the pine pellets) or my ferrets think it is a dig box. One time they got into the closet where the pellets are kept pellets everwhere

I have to do the same with the scoopable on cage cleaning days. I scoop out all the used litter, put some fresh in a clean box, and dump the remainder from the old into the new. Else it becomes a dig box immediately

My ferrets think it's a dig box even while it's full of their own waste.

Are they bored? What kind of toys are in cage?

My ferrets think it's a dig box even while it's full of their own waste. Mine will do that as well when they've decided it's time to come out of the cage, and I'm not moving quickly enough for them
