At the moment, my guys have Yesterday's News as litter. The only downfall is that it's getting rather expensive as they dump it rather quickly.
We use non-medicated chicken feed for our cats' litter and it's great. We did use World's Best Cat Litter (for the cats and ferrets) but again, the price was astounding... Could I use chicken feed for my ferrets' litter...? It looks almost identical to WBCL.
Another possibility... I have a GIANT bag of shredded aspen that I occasionally use for the snakes. Could this be used as litter? I know it's recommended for reptiles and small mammals as bedding because it doesn't contain aromatic toxins like pine and cedar do.
Input?

From what I read chicken feed is basically the same as WB. Mae sure it doesn't get bugs in it and you're go to go

Thanks for posting that link - I've considered trying it once my WB bag is gone. Does it control odor well?

Yep, but now the litter area sort of smells like chicken feed now Doesn't really bug me since it reminds me of my childhood when we raised chickens for food. lol

Littlewiseowl, thanks for that link! I keep on thinking about trying this stuff. My big concern is that I've been using the Arm & Hammer corn litter and it has a bit of baking soda and is lightly scented already; OBVIOUSLY chicken feed wouldn't be. I can't think of anything I might add to the litter to make it smell fresh, really. This stuff seems to be GREAT at odor control and I don't want to sacrifice that.
Also, the whole thing about bugs getting in it really worries me. I didn't see anyone talk about it there on that link, but I've seen other discussions where people talk about receiving a bag that had weevils already in it , and having to freeze down any portion they weren't already using in the litter bin. I struggle for space to house the SOUP in the freezer, much less 10-50lbs of litter! And we have two fridges and a freezer! (mom owns a cakery, everything is full of cake ingredients >_<)
I'm just thinking WB and the Arm and Hammer aren't at risk like the feed would be. Anyone come up with any other info? I couldn't find anything conclusive.

Weevils in the litter box....blurgh! As if what we find in the litter box already isn't bad enough sometimes... I think I'll stick with my local imitation of YN - Good Mews. About $5-8 for a 30 lb. bag and I'm not supporting Purina! Yay! I did think about the chicken feed till everyone started mentioning bugs though... Lesser of two weevils, eh?

We've been using chicken feed for our cats for about half a year now, my aunt has too and we've never seen bugs.
Trust me, if we did, my family would have had that bag out of the house so fast.

Any input on the aspen shavings though?

If they've been cured to eliminate the oils in them, they should be fine. Feline Pine is fine because of this, so I don't see why aspen wouldn't be.

you said it was expensive because it gets dumped so often are you talking cleaned out and thrown away or like ferrets turning the box over and it getting everywhere?

They've been kiln-dried, is that the same?
And the ferrets dumping it and getting their water in it so I can't even reuse it.
