So as some of you may know I live in a rather small town and I started calling up vets in the closest city to me as it's a bit larger, I called one, they informed me that they mostly do large animals, refered me to the vet "across the street" David Volz, they get quite a bit of ferrets she said, who knew! $28 for a distempter shot and they don't have an office visit fee, can everyone do it with me? I've been going to vets since I could remember with horses, dogs, cats, donkeys, alpacas, llamas, ferrets, you name it... but an exotic vet that does ferrets with no office fee? Unheard of to me! Gotta call them back to make Jude's first appointment as soon as my husband responds to my text. I'm so excited.

That is almost too good to believe. Most vets siphon off as much of your money as possible. Typically charging more for the "exotics" office visit. If this vet and you have a good vibe, I'd say you have found a treasure. Check about emergency hours... hopefully you will never need to use them BUT you need to have them available

Check to find out what brand of distemper vaccine it is. I know some places are using the dog version. Glad you found a vet

jacks, i find that very hard to believe(or not all vets are like that). after pebbles surgery, it was estimated over 1500$, espically with everything else, the vet dropped it down to around 1110$, and we took our new ferret in, and brought pebbles along, just to get her checked out, and she didn't charge us anything for that.

Nice! My vet charges 44 dollars for a health exam everytime I walk through the door =/ no office call fee .. 14 for distemper 22 for rabies.

I will let you know. I'm not sure if I'm going to get distemper shots right away, I've been researching about the mothers antibodies and stuff... I was thinking of waiting another two months then getting it. What do you think? As for rabies I think I'm going to skip that shot and not get it. The chance of Jude being bit by an animal with rabies is unlikely and I don't want to put him through more stress than he needs to be. Anyone else here opt out of rabies?

The distemper is the only vaccine I get. I prefer to wait for the immune system to be fully mature (around 6 months) because any vaccine given before the maternal antibodies wear off is useless. My plan for my youngest is to vaccinate around 5-6 months, then get a titer done 2 weeks later to confirm a healthy immune response. If the antibodies are high, no need to do an adutuonal, and protection should continue years (if not life). But older ferrets an sick ferrets shouldn't be vaccinated, so it doesn't matter much anyway I skip rabies because I don't see a purpose. The law doesn't enforce the rabies requirement strictly here, and my ferrets don't go out in Public much and I don't let strangers hold my ferret to risk them biting anyone.

After my recent experience I have to agree with jacks momma, there is way too much variance in the price of care. The local vet quoted me $600 for barum xray and $1500 for surgery. I went to a vet one hr away, and paid less then $200 for barum, and the entire bill with a sunday emergency visit and 2 nights stay AND surgery was less then the first vet quoted for surgery.

Yikes, they need more price regulations here or something. I know my mom's large animal vet breaks us a deal cause we refer to him and promote him, also when the huge flood happened in Houston, my mom was able to fill her large diesel truck with bags and bags of supplies from the two floors above water when the hospital flooded. Their policy makes them throw it away, my mom was able to take it home and give it to the vet since it wasn't contaminated. They REALLY loved us after that

I agree with Jacksmomma, every vet I've known has been that way for the most part. I do not personally support any vaccines, but if you're going to do distemper the way you're thinking and that Jackie outlined is the optimum way to go... The rabies vaccine that they are using today is a strain that is no longer in existence in the wild and hasn't been for years. It does quite a bit more damage than others on the market, as well. So, 0 benefit in the event of running across a rabies-infected animal+ significant potential damage = no go for me on that. It's absolutely useless, from what I've discovered personally. I respect how other people feel. So if you want the research I will happily send you places via a PM.

Sure any links would be awesome, I'm a research fanatic. I don't mind hearing both sides. If you could give me some info about that strain, that would just further me feeling better about not getting the rabies shot =]

Since all of mine had their kit series, and their one year booster(original 4 had a second year as well), I've not bothered with any vaccines.

I don't vaccinate. Do your research, everyone has a different risk threshold. I researched for years before feeling comfortable with my stand. What one person finds comfortable another would not but then I've been raw feeding since the time when we were thought to be crazy radicals who were going to kill our furkids and was told that I would be feeding my little ones kibble within the year (or not have any left ). That was back when vets would actually tell you that they wouldn't treat your fuzzes if they were raw fed. That was many years ago a lot changes. If you want to research rabies vaccines, check out Dr Dodds rabies challenge. That annual vaccine, I believe has now a proven ability to protect up to 5 or 7 yrs now.....sounds like a lifetime to me . Its a private study, not funded by any corporation (funded by donations). If you know the actual age of your fuzz you can participate in Dr Ruth's titre study "Mungo's Fund" She started this study when her little fellow, died of a reaction to the distemper vaccine that he was given (and she a vet couldn't save him) ciao
